A 16-year-old boy and a man have been convicted of the "savage" murder of a father-of-five who was killed just metres from his home.Carl Keatley and Jordon Carroll guilty of murdering father of five Michael Eccles just yards from his front doorCarl Keatley and Jordan Carroll were drinking vodka before the murderBirmingham Crown Court heard Michael Eccles, 43, had left his local Costcutter with a bottle of wine and milk when he was chased and attacked in January this year.He suffered massive facial injuries, his left eye socket burst and he had broken bones in his neck and ten broken ribs.The factory worker from Lichfield was left brain damaged and died the next day.The prosecution said a witness saw Jordan Carroll, who was 15 at the time, leave Mr Eccles on the ground.He then ran back to deliver a "football-like kick to the head".Michael EcclesVictim Michael EcclesMr Eccles' family released a statement after the verdicts saying they would never forgive the "evil" killers.Brother-in-law John Bayliss said: "We hope that the sentences that are to be passed will be harsh enough to reflect what a vicious and sustained attack it was on an innocent man."I believe in an eye for an eye. In the absence of that, life should mean life - not 15 years or less."The sentence must be a deterrent to the feral youths who terrorise our society, apparently above the law."We will never forgive this evil pair. They showed no mercy to a defenceless man as he lay dying on the floor."The teenager and fellow killer Carl Keatley, 20, of Greencroft, Lichfield, had been drinking vodka all afternoon in a nearby park.The boy claimed he was too drunk to remember the attack.Keatley, who has a false leg, said he couldn't have kicked and stamped on Mr Eccles.Edward Carroll guilty of perverting the course of justiceEdward Carroll: Protected sonBut forensic examinations showed trainer marks from both defendants on the victims chin and chest.Carroll's mother alerted police when she saw her son "caked in blood".But her husband Edward, 55, helped wash the blood off him, and put his son's clothes and trainers in the washing machine, destroying vital evidence.Carroll senior was found guilty of perverting the course of justice.Judge Robert Juckes QC said the case had been "difficult and troubling".He adjourned sentencing until Friday, September 11. All three were remanded in custody.Speaking after the verdicts were returned, Chief Superintendent Mick Harrison, commander of Staffordshire Police's Trent Valley division, said: "Mr Eccles suffered sickening injuries in a pointless, savage attack."
