BusinessWeek reports that, at a press conference in Tokyo yesterday, Sony announced plans to launch an online store, similar to the iTunes store. Dubbed the Sony Online Service, the store is said to be based around Sony's PlayStation Network. However, while Sony is trying to establish its own online store with content available for purchase online, BW reports that Sony is not trying to copy iTunes, rather the company will actively try to differentiate its service from what Apple is already offering.
Sony executives refused to say how much it plans to invest in the new online service. Kazuo Hirai, executive vice-president for networked products and services, said the service would be based on Sony's PlayStation Network. The Web-based gateway for PlayStation 3 video game consoles has been Sony's most successful push into online commerce so far. Launched three years ago, the PSN has 33 million registered users and sells thousands of downloadable games, TV shows, and movies. This fiscal year, Sony expects the service to bring in $500 million in revenues, triple the previous year's total. Last month, Sony signed a deal with Netflix that lets PS3 users stream movies and other content through the gaming console. "There's some debate as to whether all PlayStation Network users would migrate to the new service," Hirai said. "We would target quite a few of them."
I think this is a good look tbh. More interested in getting them PSN vouchers for cheap down the line seeing as they would be widely available.

Sony plans to bring this premium service to BRAVIA TV’s, VAIO Laptops and Blu-ray players. They will leverage the existing Playstation Network interface and deliver a more advanced infrastructure, one that can cater across all product lines. Fortunately, those of you with existing Playstation Network ID’s will be able to log in with the same username and password, and those of you who sign up to this new service will be able to log into the Playstation Network. Hundreds of movies from all major studios will be able be streamed in standard and high definition, with support from such studios as 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Walt Disney Pictures, Lionsgate, Warner Brothers, Universal, MGM, and of course Sony Pictures. Kaz mentioned this will start next month for VAIOs, Blu-ray players and networked BRAVIAs – as well as any Windows PC.This venture inspired a new company called Sony Network Entertainment, Inc., with Tim Schaaf as President who will report to Kaz.
