MICHAEL JOHNSON will be out of action for a YEAR after damaging cruciate knee ligaments in training. The Manchester City midfielder had only just fought his way back to full fitness after a year out with a troublesome pelvic problem. That came after a double hernia operation and an abdominal injury wrecked the middle of his 2007-08 season. The unlucky 21-year-old was destined for great things after being given his debut by Stuart Pearce three years ago and making it into the England Under-19 and Under-21 sides. He fell off the radar both with City and at international level but had recently fought his way back to appear as a late sub in City's 3-1 win over West Ham at the end of September.Local-lad Johnson then scored a cracking long-range goal when he came on in the 5-1 Carling Cup win over Scunthorpe in October.Boss Mark Hughes felt it would be like signing a multi-million pound player by having him back after so long out. But he damaged his knee this week in an innocuous challenge during training.Coach Eddie Niedzwiecki painted a picture of how much pain the time on the sidelines had already cost him.Niedzwiecki said: "Jonno is a young player who's had an horrendous time with injuries. You could see it in his face he was devastated by what had happened to him. As a youngster, all you want to do is play football."City are flying again after wins over Arsenal and Chelsea. Those huge victories ended a run of seven straight draws that was undermining their bid for a Champions League spot. The turnaround was sparked by a dressing-room row that followed the draw with Hull. Now Hughes is happy for the players to continue to tear strips off each other.AdvertisementCity assistant boss Mark Bowen said: "It's very, very healthy. We said last year when we first came into the club that there almost seemed to be an apathy about the place."If we lost it was almost as if players tended to accept it. That was a horrible feeling so we were delighted to see the reaction after the Hull game."Obviously, there's the tiny element that you can't let it turn into a situation, where it gets physical. But on this occasion it was like a breath of fresh air in the place."Read more: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/2767119/Crocked-Jonnos-year-KO.html#ixzz0ZL4tsSKJ
