they swipe as a backup if chip and pin doesnt work.

yup and as a last resort they use manual dockets - take an impression of the card and get you to sign some paperwork

Really? where?I work in currency exchange, only chip+pin & UK banks as well as ID.But when i was working in retail you could swipe and sign, one time i forgot to get the customer to sign the receipt,store manager told me to just scribble on it.

only if chip nd pin machines aint working the odds of this happening is rare. coz u cnt say oh i dnt knw my pinbaitness lolamatuers

from an "account/credit" view swipes is if the person is not there present, funds are available, so they use the chip & pin and by stuff ... also known as "swiping"
