http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2796689/Whalers-smash-activist-ship.htmlJAPANESE whalers have sliced in half a hi-tech anti-whaling craft in the latest dramatic battle between whalers and environmental activists.The £1million "stealth" Ady Gil — which resembles a futuristic space craft — sank after the violent attack but its six man crew were rescued uninjured from the freezing waters.Captain Paul Watson — founder of the radical environmental group Sea Shepherd — said the Ady Gil was near Commonwealth Bay in the Antarctic when it was rammed by the Japanese Ship, Shonan Maru — a security boat for Japan's whaling fleet.Speaking from Sea Shepherd's mother ship the Steve Irwin, Captain Watson said: "This seriously escalates the whole situation."He continued: "According to the Institute of Cetacean Research, the Ady Gil's crew were launching projectiles at the Nisshin Maru and attempted to entangle its propellers with rope."Australia director for Sea Shepherd Jeff Hansen said the Ady Gil was then rammed.Mr Hansen said: "They saw the Shonan Maru approaching and tried to back away but they couldn't get out of the way in time and were T-boned by the Shonan."The Shonan put a hole in the Ady Gil and the nose has clean broken off."Mr Hansen said the Ady Gil issued a mayday call that was not answered by the Japanese whaling fleet.The crew were later rescued and transferred to the Sea Shepherd fleet's third boat, the Bob Barker.Sea Shepherd sends boats to Antarctic waters each year to try to stop the Japanese whaling fleet killing whales in the region under what it calls a scientific whaling program.Conservationists and many countries say the program is a front for commercial whaling.
