A youth has died after being stabbed at Victoria Station in central London, causing disruption to the Underground network during rush-hour.

The victim went into cardiac arrest after being attacked at about 1720 GMT and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.

A number of arrests have been made and police officers are at the scene.

The Underground station has been cordoned-off. Travellers cannot join the District or Circle lines there.

Journey delays

The Victoria Line is running but has become severely overcrowded.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "Officers are investigating a fatal stabbing at London Victoria station.

"A male youth was taken to hospital where he later died.

"A number of arrests have been made and officers from the BTP and Metropolitan Police remain at the scene."

He added: "Passengers are advised to avoid the area at the present time and expect delays to journeys."

'Extensive' efforts

An ambulance spokesman said: "We sent two ambulance crews, a motor cycle responder, a single responder in a car and a duty officer.

"The patient was in cardiac arrest at the scene and extensive efforts were made to resuscitate him both at the scene and on the way to hospital."

A Transport for London spokesman said: "District and Circle Lines are non-stopping at Victoria after a passenger incident at Victoria Tube station.

"The ticket hall is closed in that part of the station, as is part of Victoria bus station. The Victoria Line is unaffected."
