Someone call Paddy Considine

The torture and death of a vulnerable man whose headless body was dumped in a lake has been branded "depraved" by a judge as he jailed those responsible for nearly 100 years.

Judge John Bevan QC spoke as he sentenced six members of the same Luton household for killing Michael Gilbert.

The 26-year-old had been kept as a slave and tortured for his benefit money before being killed.

His butchered corpse was thrown in the Blue Lagoon in Arlesey, Bedfordshire, last year. Knee joints, a forearm and an elbow were missing, as well as his head.

James Watt, 27, his girlfriend, Natasha Oldfield, 29, and his brother Richard's girlfriend, Nichola Roberts, 22, have been jailed for life for murder.

Watt will serve a minimum of 36 years. Chillingly, he was heard to say "cheers" to the judge as he was sent down.

Judge Bevan told him: "You had your fun, now you must pay for it. You are dangerous, cruel, vindictive, spiteful and heartless."

Oldfield will serve a minimum of 18 and Roberts a minimum of 15.

James' brothers - Robert Watt, 20, and Richard Watt 25 - and his mother, Jennifer Smith-Dennis, 58, have been jailed for eight years, six years and 10 years respectively for familial homicide.

Sentencing at Luton Crown Court, Judge Bevan said the whole case was a "grotesque story".

The jury heard how "vulnerable" Mr Gilbert - who met James Watt at a children's home when they were 15 - had been treated as a slave.

Police said he had been "adopted" by the Watts several years before his death and regularly beaten and threatened.

He was hit with bats, shot, stabbed and once made to goad a large pet lizard until it attacked him.

Oldfield's diary included plans for a game show where contestants would pay £5 to slap him and £25 to headbutt him.

Mr Gilbert escaped several times - but the family found him and forced him back.

Judge Bevan said he had suffered a "cruel, lonely and violent death".

He told the Watt family: "I have only ever dealt with a handful of cases where the behaviour can properly be described as depraved and you can be rightly added to this list.

"How, in a civilised society, this behaviour was allowed to continue is a mystery."

Mr Gilbert's sister, Patricia Bussey, said: "I hope they rot - you just can't get your head round how sick people can be."
