NIKOLA ZIGS IN FOR BLUES

Blues have pulled off a major transfer coup by signing towering Serbian international striker Nikola Zigic on a four-year deal.

The 6ft 8in frontman has joined Blues from top Spanish La Liga side Valencia for an undisclosed fee.

As well being a major threat in the air Zigic, who is World Cup bound, has a good touch on the ground and an impressive goalscoring record wherever he has played.

With Carson Yeung's support Alex McLeish persuaded the player to move to St. Andrew's ahead of competition from top European clubs.

The 29-year-old began his career in his home country with lower league clubs before securing a move to European giants Red Star in 2003.

During his time with Red Star he scored 71 goals in 110 games in all competitions and helped them to win the Serbian League and Cup double in both 2003-40 and 2005-06

He was subsequently named Serbia's Player of the Year in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Nikola ZigicHis goalscoring talent earned him a move to Spain in 2006 where he linked up with Racing Santander.

In his season at Santander he notched 11 goals 32 appearances, before he was snapped up by Valencia for a fee reported to be £13.5m.

He was loaned back to Santander last campaign, and his impressive goalscoring prowess continued with 13 goals in 19 games.

Whilst at Valencia he made 28 appearances and scored five times.

On the national stage Zigic has played 42 times for Serbia and scored 16 goals - better than a one in three average.

He becomes McLeish's third signing of the summer transfer window after goalkeeper Ben Foster and Spanish midfielder Enric Valles.

Comments reportedly made by Nikola Zigic's agent, Milan Calasan, are untrue.

Aston Villa did not make any "11th hour" attempt to contact the Serbian striker's representatives.

No contact was made by the club on the day that Zigic arrived in Birmingham - or at any time before or after.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill, responding to speculation about the then Valencia striker in 2008, went on record stating: "There's not a grain of truth in the story that we've put in an offer for the player and I don't know where it's coming from. I don't even know the player's agent."

Small Heath really are the most petty club in the country.
