Sky has announced that Sky Sports News will leave the Freeview platform later in the year and become an exclusively pay-TV channel.

Under the changes, Sky Sports News will become Sky3+1 on Freeview and offer an hour timeshift of the already available Sky3 channel.

From that point, Sky Sports News will only be available on Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk TV, along with Sky's online and mobile platforms.

Sky said that changing Sky Sports News to an exclusively pay-TV channel is about "allowing it to benefit from continued growth in subscription revenues".

Later in the year, the satellite broadcaster also plans to launch Sky Sports News HD, which will become the fifth HD channel in the Sky Sports bouquet. More details about the channel will be announced in "the weeks ahead".

Alongside the channel developments, Sky also plans to build on the "existing success" of Sky Sports News with increased editorial investment.

The extra financial support will help "bring customers even richer and broader coverage of sports news, as well as faster reaction to breaking stories wherever they happen".

Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis said: "Sky Sports News has been a great success over the last 12 years and we have big ambitions to make it even better.

"As part of a subscription service, customers can look forward to expanded coverage and the launch of Europe's first HD sports news service."

Last month, it emerged that Sky News had initiated plans to streamline its sports reporting team to foster greater collaboration with the Sky Sports News operation.

sky sports HD is doin it.

No, it's a real mess. I can see what they are trying to do, but there wasn't anything wrong with it in the first place. I know they had to jazz it up for the relaunch but they just went mad with it.

Its like when I get pissed off when perfectly good websites make a load of changes and add in all kinds of pointless multimedia which look fancy, but ultimately make the simple things less accessible. The Guardian website and PlanetF1 had some terrible relaunches recently. I preferred when websites were just text and a few pictures and loaded without a problem. Similar thing with Sky Sports News, its just a sports news channel and has been for all this time and people have been happy with that. This new look is just unnecessary.

Is it just me or is regular SSN (405) suddenly at a weird picture angle? The info tab on the right has shifted out of view? My telly is already widescreen so even if they have adjusted it into widescreen format it shouldn't really effect anything?

Skys adverts for it is jokes aswell.

"Great news, sky sports news will now only be available to sky sports subscribers" *Said with a smile on his face*

What great news you muppet? it's like they think that by closing the boarders, those of us without American citizenship will sign up to uphold the constitution.

Well f*ck you, I won't sign up. I'm staying in Mexico. The quality is sh*t but it'll do.
