Nigeria banned from international competitions

17 posts in this topic

Nigeria have been banned from competing in international competition for the next two years by unhappy president Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan has imposed the suspension following the Super Eagles' dismal showing at the World Cup in South Africa.

Coached by Swedish veteran Lars Lagerback, they finished bottom of the Group B table after losing to Greece and Argentina and drawing with South Korea.

"Mr President has directed that Nigeria will withdraw from all international football competition for the next two years to enable Nigeria to reorganise its football," said Ima Niboro, a spokesperson for Jonathan.

"This directive became necessary following Nigeria's poor performance in the ongoing FIFA World Cup."

Under Fifa rules, government interference with national teams is strictly forbidden.

Idiotic, seeing as the government isn't meant to interfere and will now impose sanctions on a federation that is already inept and "broke".

And the next competition isn't till 2012 either, wonder if this means he won't allow a team to the olympics which will be a shame.

shows how much you know...

before the world cup the president had a commission that was looking to all aspects of nigerian football... the commission included JJ Okocha John Fashanu and other ex footballers....

The NFF is not broke as you seem to claim , but it is inept and corrupt and riddled with politics....the findings of the commission was that everything should be dismantled...

Did you know that over $250,000 went missing from a locked safe in the federations offices just before the world cup and till now the culprit has not been found?

What Nigeria is doing is what the French need to do and certainly what England need to do to stop the rot...

Everyone in Nigeria is backing the move

I didn't know about the investigation, but I clearly put broke - "broke" for a reason, never for a second would I believe that they are actually broke, which is my point.

Dismantling the FA, when he should just dismantle the whole government.

They are going to write to the FA and explain the situation in order to try and avoid the fines.

Haha nah, I just don't agree with the president stepping in and doing this and by him doing so Fifa should get involved and ban them. As they say politicians shouldn't get involved in football matters.

Other than that this FA is in a total and utter mess, it's going from bad to worse.

Lol, yeah I hear that.

Might actually turn out well. But, football should be the least of the presidents worries.

nah the president done the right thing

did you know that the NFF chartered a jumbo jet painted specially in the Nigerian team colours at the cost of $150,000 just to take the team to South Africa and said plane never turned up leaving the players stranded in Europe until a replacement turned up

The warm up game with colombia that was supposed to take place with colombia at west ham was moved 3 times before the NFF had to change the venue to milton keyes and had to pay the air fairs and fees of the colombians while blaming the promoters Pro Global Sports ( they are my people and i know the mess was down to the NFF)

the nigerian team had an official entourage of 632 people that followed the team to south africa...everything being funded by the government...

Everything is a big mess and this is the only way to sort out the rot

suspending the team doesnt do anything though. They will blame the wrong people, when the corruption is carried out by his own friends and friends of friends. its not the players stealing money, its the officials chosen by govt. everything is politically inept, like nearly every arm of Governance there, so might as well just suspend the whole country from operating for 2yrs by using that excuse.

They are not just suspending the team, they are reorganising the whole Nigerian Football Federation....

changing everything from the officials to coaches to players

Should have happened 8 years ago!

This campaign was a shambles.

Lagerback clearly didn't have enough time to work with the disgraceful squad that was selected. Definitely in support of him building up a team consisting of a core homegrown base.

Need to develop links with expats as well. Despite their performance it was good to see London boys like Shittu and Etuhu repping.
