Manchester City have reportedly made a bid for Benfica's David Luiz, with the Portuguese giants taking the offer under consideration.

Portuguese newspaper Record have reported that City have offered a bid rumoured to be just over £26million for the versatile Brazilian defender, who has established himself as a key member of the squad at the Lisbon club, but he is valued at somewhere close to £30million.

With free spending City already shelling out for stars such as Jerome Boateng, Yaya Toure and David Silva this summer, they are looking to flex their considerable financial muscle further by bringing in the highly rated 23-year-old, who starred in Benfica's title winning campaign last season.

Key man

If Luiz is to be brought in, he would bring direct competition to an expensively assembled defence including Boateng, Kolo Toure, Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott, although he will also vie for the left-back role currently occupied by Wayne Bridge.

Having already parted with Argentina star Angel di Maria, who has moved to Real Madrid, Benfica are desperate to keep their successful squad together, but president Luis Felipe Vieira conceded that they will only sell if their valuation is met.

"David Luiz only leaves Benfica if any club pays the real value in the market," he said.

"We are not interested in the operation because he is a key man for the team and Benfica want to avoid the exit of many men to reduce our power."

Grim times. City are gonna take the piss over the next two or three years.

They've done their transition phase of buying players who are good but not class (the adebayors, kolo, petrov, bellamy etc etc) now they've bought in two top drawer players, if they get another 'big name' this summer then its not gonna be long before they start challenging surely?

MANCHESTER CITY have thrown Stephen Ireland, Nedum Onuoha and Michael Johnson into the package as part of a plan to sign Mikel Arteta.

All three have been offered in a swap deal to tempt Everton manager David Moyes to sell his star asset.

Despite City's swollen squad, they are trying to sign Arteta for a touch of magic in the centre of midfield.

The Spaniard, 28, is one of the most accomplished players in the Premier League but Moyes does not want to sell.

Ireland and Onuoha are expected to hold talks about their future with Italian coach Roberto Mancini this week.

But although Moyes does not want to lose Arteta, he is interested in a deal for Onuoha. The Toffees chief wants to strengthen his defence and believes the 23-year-old's versatility would be a big plus.

He plans to use Onuoha in a right-back role despite the former England Under-21 star normally turning out as a centre-half.

Onuoha has grown unhappy at his lack of chances at Eastlands and is keen for a move to kickstart his career.

He only made five Premier League starts last season under Mancini and has aired his frustrations in public.

Everton are willing to pay him £25,000 a week to switch down the M62 but it is the chance of a regular starting spot that will most appeal to the youngster.

Guest M12 Part 2

Moyes should bite his hand for that deal

Ireland, Onouha and Johnson? for 28 year old Arteta?

If he can get Johnson fit again and motivated hes potentially one of the PL stars of the future

i agree. Ireland for Arteta alone is arguably not a bad deal so all 3 is a good one

Lukas Podolski's agent has confirmed a number of clubs are chasing the German star amid reports that Manchester City are keen on signing the forward.

Reports have suggested big-spending City are eyeing a move for Cologne ace Podolski after impressing at the World Cup in South Africa.

Italian duo AC Milan and Juventus as well as Turkish titans Fenerbahce are also thought to be keeping tabs on the 25-year-old's situation at Cologne.

Podolski's representative, Kon Schramm, has confirmed a host of sides are keen on the player, but that the former Bayern Munich man was happy to stay at Cologne.

"There are enquires (with regard to Lukas) from England, Italy and Spain." Schramm told Cologne daily Express.

"At the moment Lukas is keeping fully focused on the World Cup campaign, afterwards he has a contract left at Cologne until 2013.

"And then he just said before the World Cup he is going to remain with Cologne."

Barcelona want Netherlands hard man Nigel de Jong to be included in Manchester City's offer for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, according to El Mundo Deportivo.

De Jong, 25, is expected to lose his starting spot to ex-Barca man Yaya Toure next season. With the World Cup 2010 finalist not keen on spending time on the sidelines, Barcelona have targeted him to fill in for the Ivorian next season.

City are understood to be willing to consider the offer, with ex-Espanyol utility player Pablo Zabaleta also interesting them. Ibrahimovic is rumoured to be ready to make the switch to Eastlands if his exorbitant £250,000 a week contract demands are met.

Officials from Manchester United and Manchester City are set to meet with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's agent next week to discuss the player's future, according to Sport.

Ibrahimovic, 28, is believed to be on the fringes at Barcelona after a disappointing debut season and the club are reportedly determined to sell to ease their current debt crisis.

The Swede is believed to be available for half the £65 million paid to Inter last summer, and has already attracted interest from AC Milan.

Agent Mino Raiola will meet with the north west giants after Ibrahimovic made it clear if he was to leave Barca he would only move to the Premier League. His huge £250,000-a-week wage demands could only be met by City, however.

Mario Balotelli's agent has claimed the Inter Milan striker is not on the verge of joining Manchester City.

The 19-year-old frontman has long been linked with a move to Eastlands and has been tipped to leave Giuseppe Meazza this summer.

Balotelli fell out of favour with the Nerazzurri last season after a bust-up with then manager Jose Mourinho.

The fiery forward has three years left on his existing deal with Inter but has been attracting strong interest from the Premier League with City and rivals Manchester United reportedly in the frame.

Balotelli's agent Mino Raiola insists no deal will be completed between City and Inter on Monday, but did not move to quash the transfer speculation

"Today there will be no developments," he told tuttomercatoweb.com.

"I don't think the situation will be solved this evening. The (transfer) figures? No comment."

Low it
