family guy can be ridiculously random at times,

Family Guy is an interesting example of when TV network interference probably made the show better. The first seasons had better plots and stories when they were starting out and had to conform to network expectations, with cutaways and random humour just in parts. Since they got uncancelled off their DVD sales and got complete control, the stories have gone and the manatees moved in

Depends on how you judge a shows quality I guess.

When I'm watching Family Guy I'm not looking for intriguing plot arcs and storylines, I'm looking purely for lulz, and most of the time, regardless of how thin the plot is, the lulz are delivered.

It does need some more serious aspects to it however.

South Park and Family Guy need to take leaves out of each others books. South Park was better when it had the hardcore satire episodes alongside the just, strange and bizarre, more esoteric and 'random' eps if you will e.g scott tenorman must die etc
