Said time ago llow it being in Delhi - bridges bussing up ceilings falling

/

Fears are growing about the participation of some major nations in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, due to start on October 3, as problems continue to plague the final preparations.

Following the collapse of a pedestrian footbridge on Tuesday, part of the ceiling in the weight-lifting venue has fallen down.

With accommodation standards at the athletes' village branded unhygienic and barely fit for habitation, the chairman of England's Games team said the event was now "on a knife-edge".

Scotland has delayed its team's departure for India, and Wales have given organisers until the end of the day to confirm that all facilities are ready.

A snake was found in an athlete’s Commonwealth Games accommodation it has been revealed, as two more competitors pulled out of the troubled event in India.

It was not known if the animal, found in a South African’s room at the athletes’ village, was poisonous but the incident raised ‘grave concerns’, said the country’s high commissioner, Harris Mbulelo.

‘If snakes are found, we can’t ask our teams to stay there,’ he added.

The village, which has been the focus of complaints over cleanliness and unfinished construction, is on the banks of New Delhi’s Yamuna river, which is swollen from heavy rains that often force snakes into residential areas.

The reports came as Australian cyclist Travis Meyer and table tennis player Stephanie Sang pulled out of the Games, following a string of other competitors who have quit over health and security concerns.

The situation in the athletes’ village has improved in recent days, according to some team officials, after inspections last week found rooms spattered with chewed tobacco and human excrement.

But, with the Games due to start on Sunday, Tuelo Serufho, head of the Botswana contingent, said the rooms were still ‘unliveable for our athletes’, with filthy bedsheets, bathroom fixtures that did not work and construction debris yet to be cleared away.

The English team, which checked into hotels last week because of the conditions, said athletes would move into the village today.

‘It’s exciting but also a relief to be able to occupy our accommodation,’ said team leader Craig Hunter. ‘It has been a challenging experience but one that will make us stronger.’

New Delhi organisers have been heavily criticised over unfinished facilities, while last week a footbridge to the main stadium collapsed and two tourists were shot in the city. Army engineers are working to rebuild the bridge as efforts to be ready are stepped up.

ndian authorities have drafted in a crack troop of monkeys to guard foreign athletes amidst the ongoing carnage of the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

AFP reports that New Delhi council has drafted in ten langur monkey handlers fielding as many as 38 of the fearsome primates.

While the key image of the Games so far is of overflowing toilets in the athletes village and collapsing infrastructure at the stadia, the monkeys will sadly not be deployed to finish off foot bridges, repaint corridors or scrub khazis.

Rather their main task will be to take care of their smaller wild brethren, mainly from the VIP areas. Apparently the swimming facilities will be a key area for the monkey patrol.

The local monkeys are feared throughout Delhi, and even attacked the mayor in 2007, causing him to fall from his balcony to his death.

However, while the monkeys are clearly a threat it's cobras that have really put the willies up the athletes. The South African team has reportedly already found one king cobra in residence in their quarters, while another ten-footer was caught in the tennis complex.

According to the Independent, authorities have enlisted snake charmers to coax the reptiles out of the games areas.

Clearly this is job for a highly trained squad of mongooses, acting in classic Rikki-Tikki-Tavi style. So far there has been no official word on such a deployment - we can only assume that the Indian mongoose squad works under the same secrecy conditions as the SAS and Delta Force. ®

lol hahah at this debacle
