A swathe of poisonous red sludge has swept through parts of Hungary, killing at least four people and leaving more than 120 hurt.

Two children, an elderly woman and a young man were killed by the toxic red waste, which burst from a ruptured reservoir. Six villagers are missing.

The sludge, a waste product from aluminium production, contains heavy metals and is toxic if ingested.

Many of those hurt sustained chemical burns as the sludge seeped through their clothes after the leak in Ajka, 160km (100 miles) south-west of the capital Budapest. About 500 have been forced to flee their homes.

About 1 million m3 (35.3 million ft3) of the waste has poured from the reservoir, affecting 4,000ha (10,000 acres) of west Hungary.

The spillage was an 'ecological catastrophe' and it was feared the sludge could reach the Rabat and Danube rivers, according to environmental affairs state secretary Zoltan Illes.

The government declared a state of emergency in three counties affected by the flooding.

'When I heard the rumble of the flood, all the time I had was to jump out the window and run to higher ground,' said Tunde Erdelyi, whose house in Devecser was under 1.5m (5ft) of the dangerous sludge.

Has anyone noticed the rapid increase in natural, chemical and other various disasters around the world?
