But i swear i was told its bad for your credit history to check it

No it's not at all. You can view it as many times as you like as it doesn't count, but if you apply to lots of credit companies in a given period of time then other creditors can see this and that can be bad to your score.

Thats the report not score.

score doesnt mean sh*t, theres absolutely no point buying it

all companies have different criteria and will take into account your credit report info, the info you give them (salary, marital status, children, renter or homeowner etc) and whatever info they already hold to generate their own score and use that to score you on whatever product you want. no one but they know what that criteria is and they vary wildly.

so you could have 1 credit product for 2 months and your score would say 900 or whatever, but try applying for a mortgage with that....
