L.A. Noire is an upcoming video game developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. Initially announced as only for the PlayStation 3, the game was later reported to also be scheduled for release on the Xbox 360. L.A. Noire is set in "a perfectly re-created Los Angeles" of 1947, with players being given an open-ended challenge to solve a series of murder mysteries.

According to the developers, LA Noire features an investigation system that doesn't simply highlight glowing objects you have to pick up, but makes you use your keen powers of observation to examine thousands of meticulously rendered objects in the game world. The more clues you find, the more options open up for your investigations and interrogations. However, they assure us that we can also drive around and shoot people. They claim they have modeled the largest ingame world Rockstar has ever attempted, and made it period accurate to the 1940s.

L.A. Noire is also notable for using a newly developed piece of technology called MotionScan, where actors are recorded by 32 surrounding cameras to capture facial expressions from every angle. Team Bondi is using a system developed by Depth Analysis to capture true emotion and acting performances through direct facial capture--no animators needed. They hired a cast of over 300 people to sit and act out around 2000 pages of script. That's a lot of computer captured faces.

''Acccording to the EDGE preview, the motion capture animation also plays into the actual interrogations, where how successful you are depends on using the right techniques to get more information by interpreting body language of the people you're talking to''.

''We captured over 50 hours worth of dialogue in total, all using MotionScan — it’s equivalent to about two full seasons of a TV show. Each case has its own twists and turns depending on the choices you make, leading you down different paths on your way to cracking the case, giving you plenty of reasons to jump back in and replay the game.''

''Well, this isn’t really a sandbox game. You’re not going to go out and create your own gameplay. This is story-driven. The world is open for the player to explore and there are activities which may allow you to deviate from the straight and narrow – for example, on the way to a crime-scene you may get a call that a bank heist is in progress and you may want to head over there and stop it. You can explore the city and find LA landmarks and such. The city is a backdrop to the story and the crimes in the plot and the overall narrative arch, rather than a playground.''

New trailer coming Monday. It was leaked but Taketwo took it off youtube.

May 17th.

it will be employed throughout the game, in cut-scenes and during game play

the cut-scenes use the same game play engine, theres no pre-rendered videos for the cut-scenes, it's all live
