New online crime maps for England and Wales have been launched, allowing users to see which offences have been reported in their local streets.

Home Secretary Theresa May said people had lost confidence in national crime figures, and the maps would give real facts and make police more accountable.

The public can search for information on crime and anti-social behaviour by entering a street name or postcode.

The website provides more detail, down to street-level, than existing online crime maps provided by forces in England and Wales.

you get an email address of your local officers and a mobile phone.

this is one of the most stupid and irresponsible ideas by the new government as yet

what is the point in this data? to scare people and put them in a frenzy

like many have said it will f*ck up house prices in certain neighborhoods and further increase the gap between rich/upmarket and poorer areas.

if this information was only made available to the police and a select few of authorities then i'll understand but how does this help. surely it wont make the police more accountable, if anything they'll become complacent.

not really. a map of this kind in a place like london is a bit useless.

A: as the map is not very detailed at all.

as you said, insurance companies already use more detailed data, and in terms of house prices or where to live, the good postcodes will remain good for house prices, or at least unaffected by these type of maps.

such maps are only good for cities where the social status divide is very apparent, like in US cities, thats where data mapping is useful and has a big impact.
