A five-year-old girl and a shopkeeper have been seriously injured in a shooting at a grocery store in south London.

Police were called to reports of shots fired in Stockwell Food and Wine shop in Stockwell Road on Tuesday night.

The man, aged 35, and the girl are both in a critical condition in hospital.

Police believe the pair may have been innocently caught in the firing line of a gang blasting two youths who were sheltering in the shop.

Officers from Operation Trident - which focuses on gun crime in the black community - are investigating.

The shooting happened at about 2115 BST. No arrests have been made.

The little girl was hit in the chest, police confirmed, and the man was shot in the face. Their condition was described as "critical but stable".

'Gang problem'

Police said the victims were not related.

The Metropolitan Police (Met) said: "It is believed two black youths ran into the shop shortly before the shots were fired.

"The youths had been chased from Broomgrove Road, across Stockwell Road, and into the shop by three other black youths on bicycles.

"Once the youths on bikes were outside the shop, one of them fired shots into the shop front."

Det Ch Insp Tony Boughton said: "This is a terrible incident where an innocent child has been seriously injured.

"We want to hear from the local community, who might have seen these youths cycling around the estate between 2100 BST and 2200 BST.

"These criminals have seriously injured two innocent bystanders and must face the consequences of their actions."

The parade of shops remains cordoned off and Stockwell Green Court, an access road behind the main road, has also been sealed off.

Councillor Peter Robbins said: "It is incredibly shocking, I think the whole community at the moment is numb and horrified, and rightly so.

"There is a fairly well-known problem with gangs and guns in Lambeth, it is something that the council and the police are working together incredibly hard to solve.

"Obviously, there is always more you can do and incidents like this really bring that home."

Barny Stutter, who co-owns nearby Brixton Cycles, said the shopkeepers belonged to a "very tight" community.

He said: "We are absolutely disgusted with what's happened.

"This area has recovered from a bad reputation built up in the media but we love to live and work in the community."

He also said staff working in fast food shops in the area were regularly hassled by youths.

The area has long been blighted by guns, drugs and crime. But the shooting was not hidden in the dark alleyways of any nearby housing estates. It took place in a local shop that a decent, hard-working Sri Lankan family had spent years building up.

On Tuesday night, three black youths on bicycles had been seen chasing two black teenagers along Stockwell Road

ONE of the teenage suspects in the shooting of five-year-old Thusha Kamaleswaran has been stabbed.

The 17-year-old is in a "serious but stable" condition under police guard in hospital, sources confirmed.

He was admitted to hospital with stab wounds on Saturday — a day before his arrest on suspicion of the attempted murder of Thusha and 35-year-old Roshan Selvakumar.

Detectives are keeping an "open mind" over the motive for the attack in South London.

Another suspect, Kazeem Kolawoli, was remanded in custody today charged with two counts of attempted murder following the incident which left Thusha and Mr Selvakumar fighting for their lives.

Kolawoli was arrested after the innocent victims were caught in a volley of gunfire in Stockwell, South London, last Tuesday.

The 18-year-old, of Lambeth, South London, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth when he appeared before nearby Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court.

Wearing a blue and white striped T-shirt and black jeans, Kolawoli showed no emotion during the 15-minute hearing.

His parents listened intently from the public gallery as District Judge Alan Baldwin refused an application for bail.

Kolawoli will next appear at the Old Bailey on June 10.

Anthony McCalla, 19, of Streatham, South London, has also been charged with shooting the child and bystander Mr Selvakumar. He will be brought before the Central Criminal Court on the same date.

On Friday a 14-year-old was bailed to appear at a later date.

Last week, Thusha's mother Sharmila Kamaleswaran described her shock in the aftermath of the shooting which left her "feeling empty inside".

Quantcast

Police said both victims remain in a "serious but stable" condition.

Relatives are maintaining a vigil at Thusha's hospital bedside while detectives build up a "continuity trail" of the attackers' movements before the incident at the Stockwell Food and Wine store.

Thusha was hit in the chest and Mr Selvakumar suffered a head wound as two youths cowered in the shop after being chased by three others on bicycles through Stockwell.

Thusha's mother, 12-year-old brother and three-year-old sister were also in the shop during the shooting but were unhurt.
