External HD

A friend of mine has borrowed me his external hard drive to copy some stuff onto it for him. Problem I am getting is I can't access it. Keeps saying it is not formatted and would I like to format now. But the HD already has some of his stuff on it so I can't do that. How do I get around this?

If you format it, you'll loose his data. Have you tried accessing it from another machine? are you both on the same OS?

He's on Windows 7. I think I might have found something online about Windows 7 changing the Hard Drive to RAW rather than NTFS. Looking like it might be a dead out situation.
