A teenage hitman who was caught on CCTV shooting a young mother dead was jailed for life with a minimum term of 20 years at the Old Bailey today. Santre Sanchez Gayle, 15, was paid just £200 to carry out the murder of Gulistan Subasi – a fee he used to buy a gold Dolce and Gabbana beanie hat. The boy, known by the street name Riot, will spend at least two decades behind bars after being convicted of the cold-blooded murder, described by a Judge Stephen Kramer as 'an efficient, ruthless and calculated execution'.

There was sobbing from the public gallery as the killers were taken down to begin their sentences. Judge told Gayle that his 'youth and immaturity' were factors in the crime. But he added: 'Anyone seeing the short but telling CCTV clip of the shooting cannot but be struck by the chillingly deliberate and cold-blooded way in which you went about your business.' The judge described Gayle as a low-level cannabis dealer who expected to be paid £2,000 for the murder but was short-changed and only paid £200. 'You were an easily-led, immature youngster, who, if money was involved, was capable of violence out of loyalty, having cynically been used by others. 'You shot and killed Gulistan for money, and at the bidding of an older man who you were trying to impress.' The judge said it was not possible to say who was behind the killing or who recruited Billy to find someone to carry it out.

Miss Subasi had been staying with her mother at the time and was about to celebrate the birthday of her young child. The judge told her killers: 'You have deprived a mother of a much-loved daughter and a son of his mother.' He told Billy: 'You took advantage of your younger friend, Gayle. You knew he would do as he did at your bidding for money.' After a judge lifted reporting restrictions allowing the media to name the child killer, it was revealed that Gayle, now 16, is no stranger to violence.

His cousin is Donnel Carty, who, in January 2006 at the age of 18, stabbed City lawyer Tom ap Rhys Pryce to death during a robbery in Kensal Green.

Gayle’s half brother, Lloywen Carty, was part of a mob that shot dead Lee Subaran, 27, after the Notting Hill Carnival in 2004 for ‘showing disrespect’ to members of a Harlesden gang, Mus Luv Crew.

Like his relatives, Gayle carried out the murder to impress senior gang members. Born in Hammersmith, he was kicked out of his school, the Capital City Academy in Willesden, in 2006 and sent to an exclusion unit in Harlesden, North-West London. When his mother left him to fend for himself in a squalid flat in Kensal Green, his gang became his ‘real family’. Gayle was a ‘younger’ in the Kensal Green Boys (KGB) group in north-west London – a successor of the Kensal Green Tribe, which was responsible for killing Mr Rhys Pryce and has been held accountable for at least 150 robberies on public transport across London, even producing a ‘good mugging guide’ for members.

When he was recruited to carry out the contract killing of Miss Subasi by a senior member in the KGB – Izak Billy – Gayle leapt at the opportunity to make his name.

Billy, of Willesden, north London, was also found guilty of murder and was today given a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years.

Despite having never held a gun in his life, Gayle quickly agreed to kill the young mother for a fee of £2,000, although he later received only £200. The Old Bailey heard that Miss Subasi was executed on the orders of her ex-husband Serdar Ozbek, 29, who feared she would take their son out of the country because she was about to marry someone else. The court was told that he arranged the killing in telephone calls to London from Turkey. However, Ozbek was cleared of murder after the court heard he was in Turkey when his former wife was shot dead.

On the night of the murder on March 21 last year, Gayle was driven to a flat in Hackney, East London. CCTV footage showed the teenager calmly walking up to the flat and knocking on the door as he pulled the shotgun from his rucksack and rested it on a gate. The flash of the gun was caught on film as he pulled the trigger before fleeing in a cab.

Miss Subasi’s mother, Dondu, 44, heard her daughter scream ‘Mama’ and found her lying with a tennis-ball sized hole in her chest. She died shortly afterwards in hospital.

Mrs Subasi tearfully told the Old Bailey: ‘I was devastated when my daughter was killed in front of my eyes and this took its toll on my life and health. I do not feel that life is worth living any more.’ Gayle was caught after boasting of the hit to his friend, Ryan Hatunga, 19, who went to police after Billy threatened to kill him.

Gayle and Billy hurled abuse at the jury as they were convicted at the Old Bailey yesterday. As they were led away, one of them shouted ‘****ing stitch me up and find me guilty’ and ‘**** you, you don’t know about nothing, haven’t even looked at the evidence. Idiots.’

Three others – Ozbek and alleged middlemen Leigh Bryan, 25, and Paul Nicoloau, 29 – were cleared. Billy, 22, was also convicted of threatening to kill Mr Hatunga.

Detective Chief Inspector Jackie Sebire said: ‘This has been a particularly harrowing and difficult investigation. The CCTV footage is truly frightening and shows the youth exhibiting no doubt or hesitation as he approached the flat, rang the bell and then shot Gulistan.

‘Since his arrest he has shown no sign of remorse.’
