The X360Key is a truly revolutionary Xbox 360 game loading device. The xKey is a fully solderless plug and play DVD emulation solution that supports ALL RETAIL (NOT JTAG) 'Phat' and 'Slim'* Xbox 360 consoles. It allows games to be loaded from an external USB hard drive or flash device which plugs in to the Xbox360Key external remote with OLED display.

*All Slim Xbox360 Console support coming in a firmware update

How it Works: (Please note the information below is based on what is currently available from the X360Key team and is subject to change before final release)

The X360Key runs a custom Linux operating system that emulates the Xbox 360 DVD drive, mimicking the original DVD drive of the console but allowing games to be loaded from a USB storage device rather than a DVD. What this means in practice is that the Xbox 360 sees the xKey and attached storage device as the DVD drive the console came with and is accustomed to loading from. The X360Key team has developed profiles for each of the availalble DVD drives to ensure that as far as the Xbox 360 console is concerned, the console sees the xK3y and storage device with games on as the original DVD drive.

The X360Key main/motherboard is fitted between the DVD SATA port on Xbox 360 motherboard and the original Xbox 360 DVD drive in the console. The X360Key plugs in to the Xbox 360 DVD Drive itself and then the SATA cable from the Xbox 360 motherboard SATA port is plugged in to the X360Key. The X360Key OLED display remote is then plugged in to the xk3y mainboard but is kept outside the console to allows USB storage drives to be connected to it. The remote allows the X360Key to be controlled and games to be browsed on the USB drive and launched.

The X360Key functions in two modes:

  • Emulation - The mode in which the Xbox 360 drive is emulated and allows games to be loaded from USB storage device.
  • Pass through - The X360Key is bypassed and the Xbox360 console and DVD drive function as normal as if the X360Key were not present.

X360Key Team Press Release:

Running a custom Linux system, x360key is capable of immaculately emulating the optical disk drive in Xbox 360, allowing you to play all your Xbox 360 (and Xbox 1) games from any USB media. It is compatible with all Xbox 360 models, both Fat and Slim, and offers advanced features such as emulation of the AP25 protection.

After more than a year in development We are proud to announce one of the most sophisticated backup loaders the world has ever seen. Backed by a team of hardware experts and some of the most renowned and respected members of the Xbox hacking community We have no doubt this will be an instant success!

How it works:
The X360Key device consists of 2 parts, a motherboard and a remote.
The motherboard connects to the SATA port/bus inside the Xbox 360 console and then to the Xbox 360 DVD drive. The xKey is in essence a fully fledged computer running embedded Linux. The fact the X360Key is a powerful Linux computer allows it much greater flexibility and the opportunity to implement features which are just not possible via the flashing of DVD drive firmware due to the DVD drive chip's limited capacity and speed.
X360Key is able to:

  • Emulate (mimic with accuracy) the Xbox 360 DVD drive
  • Read USB hard drives and other USB storage media devices with various file systems
  • Update itself and other hardware from attached USB storage media
  • Communicate with the X360Key remote and other external USB devices
  • A lot more in the future! (embedded Web server and Wifi connectivity for example)

The X360Key remote is a simple, stylish device that features an OLED display and 3 buttons. It is used outside the Xbox 360 console and connects to the X360Key main/motherboard inside the console via a high speed USB 2 connection. The remote also has a USB port that is used to connect USB hard drives and other storage devices to load games from. The OLED display and buttons are used to control various aspects of the xKey and for browsing the attached USB storage media devices and launching games.
