PASSENGERS are closer to flying from London to Sydney in less than two hours.

This week will see the British launch of plans for a spaceship covering the 10,500 miles in just one hour and 45 minutes.

The first scheduled flights could take place within 20 years. And an early 2,200mph version of the Lynx craft will begin taking tourists to the edge of space for £60,000 by early 2014.

Dutchman Michiel Mol, a 42-year-old computer tycoon who co-owns the Force India F1 team, is working with Dutch airline KLM and has already sold 35 tickets for the early flights from the Caribbean island of Curacao.

He explained the sort of times his second generation crafts could rack up, saying: "Where you are going doesn't make much difference.

"You need ten minutes to get into space and maybe half an hour to decelerate and land again — and the rest of the time you are flying at up to 13,750mph.

"Flying from London to Barcelona would still take an hour or so while London to Tokyo would be about an hour and 30 minutes."

When those things fuck up and rain down on the earth surely the effects will be much more disastrous than when planes crash?

I wonder if the military will purchase a fleet. WW3 could be fought in space...

Maybe it would burn out before it hit earth? It goes drastically higher than an aeroplane

lol @ paying 60K to be some test subject

Plus we'll be long dead before this becomes remotely affordable for the vast majority.

i actuallly don't think it ever would.. the techniques they are using to become more advanced are very expensive and at no point are they ever going to do this and not make a profit out of it, so i can't see it ever being 'affordable' for most people.. most people can't even afford first class on a normal plane let alone a 13000mph spaceship

The technology will eventually become cheaper. It's just like virgin are doing with the trips to space. Its ridiculous right now but the technology will become cheaper and more available to other companies to eventually make it a commercially profitable company. Its a very long way off but it is the future. There will be the Ryan Air equivalent offering these kind of flights one day.
