Everything Everywhere Gets Ofcom OK For 4G

Everything Everywhere will launch 4G in a rebrand that will see the end of the Orange and T-Mobile brands, sky sources say.

The company that owns Orange and T-Mobile will launch superfast mobile internet in October, according to sky sources.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom approved an application by mobile operator Everything Everywhere (EE) to use its existing spectrum to deliver 4G ahead of the upcoming auction.

A well-placed source at EE told Sky News the launch of the next generation of mobile broadband would be part of a rebrand in October, which will see the company renamed to incorporate its new 4G business model.

All new customers will join EE after the rebrand, the source said - not Orange or T-Mobile.

The source added that from around March 2013 the Orange and T-Mobile brands will be dropped and all existing customers will be migrated to EE.

In response to the comments, an EE spokesperson said: "We have always planned to launch our 4G service by the end of this year and that is still on track."

They did not give any further details.

Ofcom gave EE the go-ahead to launch 4G - which is seen as crucial for video, gaming and downloading from your phone - any time after September 11 this year.

It said that allowing EE to use its existing 1800 MHz spectrum in this way will "deliver significant benefits to consumers".

Other mobile operators will get the chance to bid for lower frequency 4G spectrum in an auction process due to begin towards the end of 2012.

Rival mobile company Vodafone said in statement that it was "frankly shocked that Ofcom has reached this decision".

"The regulator has shown a careless disregard for the best interests of consumers, businesses and the wider economy through its refusal to properly regard the competitive distortion created by allowing one operator to run services before the ground has been laid for a fully competitive 4G market," the statement said.

How fast is 4G LTE?

The theoretical peak speeds for 4G LTE are 100 Mbit/s download and 50 Mbit/s upload. In reality these speeds are unlikely – real-world speeds for 4G LTE networks in the United States vary between 8 Mbits/s and 12 Mbits/s.

Some versions of 3G, such as HSPA+, can offer similar speeds. Where 4G LTE has an advantage is in ‘latency’ – the time delay in responding to actions. 4G LTE’s superior latency means it’s more responsive, which improves the overall experience.

and just as i expected

Why won’t the iPad with Wi-Fi & 4G work 4G LTE in the UK?

While the iPad does support 4G in the United States and Canada, the UK and Europe are using different ‘frequencies’ for 4G LTE. The iPad supports 700MHz and 2,100MHz frequencies, while the UK will predominately use the 800MHz, 1,800MHz and 2,600MHz frequencies to deliver 4G LTE.

so it should be the same for LTE phones released there

new ones coming out should be able to work with UK bands though seeing as they could do it with 3G

not that exciting tbh

.....Rival networks are already complaining that the approval of spectrum for use with 4G services gives the joint venture an unfair advantage, but the FT reports that the European competition authority has forced the pair to sell some of that spectrum -- and is in "advanced talks" with competitor network Three. This could mean that there are two operators offering next generation services, but neither being Orange or T-Mobile, or rather, not as we know them.

EE 4G LTE launch today

Been following on twitter @EE & www.ee.co.uk

So Everything Everywhere now being branded as EE.

Providing fast mobile broadband and a 10x faster fibre broadband service across the UK.

1st reported handsets to take advantage of before 2012 is out

Nokia Lumia 820 and & 920

Samsung Galaxy S3 (LTE Version)

HTC One XL

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE

Hasnt been officially confirmed yet but only makes business sense that the iphone 5 will be rolling out on 4G and exclusive to EE

Also even if your currently on Orange or T-Mobile and want to switch to a 4G handset apparently EE is being treated as a separate entity so you will have to switch over to EE to enjoy 4G... But reading some of the initial tweets from them, dont think they will make it a complex process. (Hope not)

in a somewhat unscientific test at the launch, guy got suttum like 30mbps (video)

wonder what itll be like in metropolitan areas with loads of users

in the US the average is around 8-12

still think its gonna cost a whole lot, always does when they launch something and dont mention the price
