Missing 5-year-old girl

180 posts in this topic

Police and "hundreds" of local residents have spent the night searching for a missing five-year-old girl who was abducted while out playing near her home.

April Jones was last seen getting into a light coloured van which drove off in the mid Wales town of Machynlleth on Monday evening.

Dyfed-Powys Police said they are becoming "increasingly concerned" for the missing youngster's safety and have deployed a large number of officers and specialist teams to investigate the disappearance. Hundreds of local residents in the small market town are said to have joined the hunt for April on Monday with many continuing their efforts overnight.

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Powell said police were following a number of lines of inquiry: "Dyfed-Powys Police have launched an intensive search and criminal investigation into the abduction of a five-year-old girl, April Jones, in Machynlleth. April was last seen playing on a bicycle near her home address at around 7.30pm and was seen getting into what we believe was a light-coloured van which then drove off."

Up to 200 people congregated at Machynlleth Leisure Centre as news of the apparent abduction broke to help in the search for the missing girl, according to reports. Police said April had been out in the town riding a bike with a friend before she vanished.

Local restaurant owner Razul Islam said a large majority of the town, which has a population of 2,000, was out in force searching for the five-year-old. "There are hundreds of people out looking for her," Mr Islam told Sky News on Monday night. "It is such a small town and nearly everyone is out looking for her - I'm shocked that it has happened in a town like this."

Machynlleth is situated in the Dyfi Valley and sits on the southern outskirts of Snowdonia National Park.

Search volunteer Anwen Morris said locals had searched an area with a 30 mile radius overnight using quad bikes and off-road vehicles. County Councillor Michael Williams also joined in the search efforts. He told BBC Radio 5Live: "People were co-ordinated by the police and as well as searching the town they went out into forested areas of the valley and wooded areas and out into hamlets and byroads."

Speaking about April's relatives he added: "They are such a lovely, caring family and they are devastated. The community is shocked and stunned over what's happened."

Inspector Kevin Davies from Dyfed-Powys Police said "every angle" of the investigation was being covered. He told the BBC that police dog teams were involved in the operation and that cars in and out of the town were being stopped and searched by officers. A family liaison officer is also keeping the "devastated" relatives of missing April informed of any developments, Mr Davies added.

Sad to hear however allowing your FIVE year old to play out at 7.30pm is negligent in my opinion.

Not being bad mind but what is a five year old doing playing out them times swear it is dark at them times? Should be in bed them times. When I was them ages wernt even allowed out in the front of the house unassisted, Parents made us play in the garden. When I got to 7 I was allowed out but was only allowed to ride my bike half way up the road and back. Same thing when I went to my child minders but being kids we would see how quick we can ride around the block without being caught. Playing football in the park same ting could only play where if my parents looked out they can see us kicking ball not behind gods back. Parents are wasted.

I was thinking the same, how can you let your 5yr old just get into some random van.

I swear I wasn't even allowed to play outside I was about 10.

I thought my house, school and grannies living room was the whole world.

Sad to hear, but unfortunately we live in a time where you have to be slightly more cautious

They're in some obscure welsh town

Why shouldn't a 5 year old be able to play outside at half 7 in her tiny village

Have you actually seen where she was playing?

Either way it's 7.30, to me that's time for a 5 yr old to get settled for bed.

If ur pup is goin to bed half 7 then they're wakin u up half 6 latest, maybe she naps after school

In what world can't a 5 yr old ride her bike round her estate

Where was she playin j? the whole Town is half the size of my road, surrounded by fields n farmland n peaceful welshmen, how scary can it be, 15 crimes a month reported apparently

Typical knee jerk reaction of backwards 2012 Britain, some c*nt kidnaps ur kid and rather than receiving sympathy n understanding suddenly ur bedtime techniques are under scrutiny from a bunch of childless experts

Muslims riot, blame a cartoon

People are poor, blame the successful

Violence, murders, crime? Poverty innit, blame the bankers

She's probably better off with the van man eh. I bet he won't risk allow her to ride bikes around like a maniac n stay up past eastenders

Local what time does cbeebies, milkshake and all them shows start for kids? Is it not Half 5 to 6 ? Why because that is the time these kids get up because they go bed between 7 and 8. You know this stuff already so meh. Child should of been in her yard let alone in her bed so meh.

Same kind of thing with Madeline McCann parents go on a piss up and leave the child alone and no one questions this type of behaviour.

Sarah Payne is a horrible tragic situation but not this

Mr Briwnant-Jones added: ‘April’s mother knew she was playing with another little girl and when she didn’t come home she went to the other girl’s house to look for her.

‘That’s when the girl said April had been taken in a van. They’re a lovely family (and) haven’t had any problems that I know of.’

Wow don't think any parents are going to be letting their kids play with that little girl no more.

This made me 8-)

Petrol station owner Nerys Zjalic said she had reopened her garage to help with the search.

She told ITV Wales: 'We'll stay open all night if we have to. We heard about the search through social networking sites and there was a lot of people going past our house. ‘My friend called to ask if we would open so people can get petrol to help in the search. Locals are out in full force searching for her.'

Her 'friend' you know. She saw a nice opportunity to coin it. As I doubt she's giving it away for free.

I'd rather base my childrens sleeping pattern around practicality rather than tv listings tbh

Unless we was watchin wrestling ppvs then my younger bros woke up with jus enough time to wash n eat before school like the rest of humanity

I understand u immigrant urbanites growin up in ur sheltered bubble of crime ridden London might struggle to wrap ur head around the continued existence of peaceful safe british communities where children play in the street together but they do exist n the kids don't go gettin kidnapped every day

Bunch of paranoid domesticated housecats
