Disney buys Lucasarts + new Star Wars Film on the way

Disney has just confirmed that it has agreed to acquire George Lucas’ Lucasfilm Ltd, and that includes rights to the Star Wars franchise. The companies have also targeted a 2015 release for Star Wars: Episode 7. The stock and cash transaction is worth an estimated $4.05 billion, and the companies have scheduled a conference call in a half-hour to discuss the deal.

“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger in a release announcing the deal. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

But Disney is paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing based on Disney’s stock price on October 26. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm chairman and founder Lucas.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and "evergreen" Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney's global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

So Disney now owns Marvel Comics , Lucasarts and ILM that is bonkers.

Avengers 2 and A new Star Wars in 2015. Madness.

Funnily enough just this weekend I read George Lucas said he didn't want to make another film 'cause the fans criticised the prequel trilogy (Episode 1-3) so much, and that he wasn't going to make any more big films.

I hope just enjoys his money and his lady. His got a nice thing with the consulting gig as well. Plus I can see him funding more personal films like Red Tails.

You kids don't understand Star Wars was not a neeky thing in the 80s it was a cool thing - like Taken is today.

Then George Lucas released some sh*t prequels where he tried turned it in to a neeky thing called Star Trek which is for nerds.

The end.

He also started Industrial Light and Magic when he was making Star Wars which is still the biggest effects house in the film industry.

Never watched a full episode of Star Trek.

Had seen the new (prequel) trilogy of Star Wars but until last weekend hadn't seen any of the originals, saw A New Hope (episode 4) on Saturday on ITV or whatever and concluded that Family Guy actually did a very good job in telling the story in their remakes.

Smart move by Lucas. Guessing the TV show plans are now shelves and with him not wanting to make any more movies I am happy Disney have taken it. They are doing pretty well with the Marvel movies so I expect the same blockbuster hits for Star Wars, just hope they get the stories right. Time to bring Luke, Hans Solo and Chewwy back onto the scene.
