Victim: Joseph Burke-Monerville was shot dead in Clapton, East London on Saturday night. He was a forensic science student at London Metropolitan University

Two teenagers were murdered within five hours of each other as violence erupted in London over the weekend.

Student Joseph Burke-Monerville, 19, was gunned down by two men wearing bandanas on Saturday night in an area dubbed ‘murder mile’.

Hours later, Peter Hagan, 16, was stabbed to death in the stairwell of a block of flats.

Joseph, a forensic science undergraduate at London Metropolitan University, was sitting in a car with two friends in Clapton, East London, when they were approached by two men at 8.20pm. Witnesses told yesterday how the gunmen fired three shots at the car before running off.

Joseph was taken to hospital but died at 11.10pm. A 22-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. A 19-year-old man who was also in the car was uninjured.

The area became known as ‘murder mile’ after eight men were gunned down in just two years.

Joseph is thought to have an identical twin brother, who is also said to be a student.

Zack Carpenter, 18, a maths student at Aberystwyth University, was visiting his parents in London when he heard gunshots.

He said: ‘I was walking from the shop at about 8.15pm. When I crossed the road I saw a black man and a white man with bandanas on. After about 30 seconds, I heard three loud bangs. It’s unnerving as it could have been me.’

Another resident said: ‘It’s really sad that a 19-year-old boy died. There have been a lot of problems with gangs around here.

Police search teams go through rubbish bins at the scene of the double shooting in Clapton, East London

‘It used to be a lot safer and quieter around here, but it’s changed a lot. We were hit by the riots in 2011 and it’s really terrible now.’

Scotland Yard said it was trying to establish a motive for the shootings but stressed that none of the men in the car was linked to gangs.

Last night friends spoke of their shock at Joseph’s death.

Michaela Georgiou Francis said: ‘It’s disgusting, especially when people like Joseph don’t live that life. It’s so tragic that this could happen to him – such a wonderful, loving young man. He was going to do amazing things. His smile will charm the angels.’

Neighbour Muz Tokosi, 50, described him as ‘a brilliant boy – very smart and hard-working’.

Mr Tokosi added: ‘He was inseparable from his identical twin brother – they did everything together and were very, very close.

THE 'MURDER MILE' OF CLAPTON

The area where the 19-year-old man was killed last night was once dubbed ‘Murder Mile’ after eight fatal shootings there in just two years.

Upper and Lower Clapton Road in London's East End became notorious last decade following a spate of gun crimes which left eight men dead either in the streets or in the leafy avenues running off them.

Clapton was also the setting for 2004 gangster film Bullet Boy.

The dead youth is the first teenager to be shot dead in London for 20 months when business studies student Nana Darko-Frempong, 18, was killed in a drive-by shooting near his home in Tulse Hill, south London, in June 2011.

The two murders take the total number of teenagers killed in London since the beginning of the year to three after 16-year-old Hani Hicham Abou el Kheir, 16, was stabbed to death by a gang near his home in Pimlico, central London, in January.

Eight teenagers were murdered in the capital in 2012. But a record number of 29 teenagers were murdered in London in 2008, topping the previous worst toll of 27 in 2007.

However, there was a steep decline to just 15 teenage murders in the capital in 2009. A total of 19 teenagers were unlawfully killed in London in 2010, while 15 teenagers were murdered in the capital in 2011.

‘Every time I saw him he’d have a novel in his hand – he was a very clever boy. The twins were both quiet, polite boys who took their studies seriously.’

Joseph, who attended St Aloysius College, a Catholic secondary school in Islington, was due to go on holiday with friends to Majorca this week. Police are attempting to trace two suspects spotted running from the scene. One was described as black, and the second was light-skinned – possibly of Asian or Turkish appearance.

Detectives have arrested several suspects in connection with the murder of Peter Hagan, who was stabbed to death in the stairwell of a block of flats in Wandsworth, South London, at 1.30am yesterday.

Neighbours told how they heard ‘screaming and shouting’ followed by an ‘eerie silence’.

Up to eight teenagers were then seen running down side streets and through a local park. Moments later Peter, from Brixton, was discovered lying slumped in the stairwell. He died minutes later.

One resident, who lives on the floor above the crime scene, said: ‘It was about 1.30am when I heard someone running on the stairs and raised voices and screaming.

‘In the past when I’ve heard noises like that, it goes on for a while but this was different because it just went silent. It was eerie. I don’t think the lad who was stabbed lived here, but he had been at a party.’

Another said: ‘It seemed like both girls and guys shouting. We hear arguing a lot, so I didn’t think anything of it until I saw the police.’ Friends paid tribute to Peter on social networking sites last night.

One, Valentina, said: ‘My heart goes out to his parents. Things are only going to get worse. Only a number of us will make it to 20.’
