The Jon Venables situation - whats your opinion on it?

Long story short. At the age of 8, he along with another boy of the same age brutally killed a younger child. - First of all, what is your opinion on what should have been done with him at this time

Bearing in mind

- The severity of the offence

- the age of the offender - if an 8 year old boy is committent murder, he has something terribly, terribly wrong with him, to the extent that I would almost say it's not his fault, but that's just me

- the age of the victim

At the trial it was established that at this location, one of the boys threw blue Humbrol modelling paint, which they had shoplifted earlier, into Bulger's left eye.[11] They kicked and stomped on him, and threw bricks and stones at him. Batteries were placed in Bulger's mouth.[22] Police believed some batteries may have been inserted into his anus, although none were found there.[3] Finally, a 22-pound (10.0 kg) iron bar, described in court as a railway fishplate, was dropped on him.[23][24][25] Bulger suffered ten skull fractures as a result of the iron bar striking his head. Dr. Alan Williams, the case's pathologist, stated that Bulger suffered so many injuries—42 in total—that none could be isolated as the fatal blow.[26]

They were eventually both tried (they had reached 11 by the time), and set to be detained for 8 years each

The editors of The Sun newspaper handed a petition bearing nearly 280,000 signatures to Home Secretary Michael Howard, in a bid to increase the time spent by both boys in custody.[42] This campaign was successful, and in July 1994 Howard announced that the boys would be kept in custody for a minimum of fifteen years,[42][43] meaning that they would not be considered for release until February 2008, by which time they would be 25 years of age.[7]

Lord Donaldson criticised Howard's intervention, describing the increased tariff as "institutionalised vengeance ... [by] a politician playing to the gallery".[7] The increased minimum term was overturned in 1997 by the House of Lords, who ruled that it was "unlawful" for the Home Secretary to decide on minimum sentences for young offenders.[44] The High Court and European Court of Human Rights have since ruled that, though the parliament may set minimum and maximum terms for individual categories of crime, it is the responsibility of the trial judge, with the benefit of all the evidence and argument from both prosecution and defence counsel, to determine the minimum term in individual criminal cases.[43]

The case led to public anguish, and moral panic in Britain.[7] Tony Blair, then the Shadow Home Secretary, gave a speech in Wellingborough during which he said: "We hear of crimes so horrific they provoke anger and disbelief in equal proportions... These are the ugly manifestations of a society that is becoming unworthy of that name."[7] Prime Minister John Major said that "society needs to condemn a little more, and understand a little less".[7] The trial judge Mr. Justice Morland stated that exposure to violent videos might have encouraged the actions of Thompson and Venables, but this was disputed by David Maclean, the Minister of State at the Home Office at the time, who pointed out that police had found no evidence linking the case with "video nasties".[45] Some UK tabloid newspapers claimed that the attack on James Bulger was inspired by the film Child's Play 3, and campaigned for the rules on "video nasties" to be tightened.[46] Inspector Ray Simpson of Merseyside Police commented: "If you are going to link this murder to a film, you might as well link it to The Railway Children".[47] The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 clarified the rules on the availability of certain types of video material to children.[7][48]

Since getting out, Venbales has been given a new identity, and violated the terms of his probation  for downloading child pornography

Pictures of someone who is supposed to be him, have been released, yet again

What do you think should be done with him? Hes now in his early-mid 20s

It's very hard not to think of brutal punishment for him but he was a child at the time, for an offence such as the one he committed I would have locked the mum away and placed the rest of the kids in care, sorry, parents been getting away with this shit for too long.

I remember the case and the parents of both had a huge hand in the behaviour of these kids, typical white trash, uneducated, neglectful parents whose children don't really stand a chance tbh.

If I could place restrictions on the amount of children some people could have I would.

Yh I agree with toney obviously the parents must have been neglecting/abusing the boys in some next ways for them to be on that madness at such a young age so I would have locked up those responsible for the boys as well.

Oh and surprise surprise now he's peedo

Swear it's like some curse past down from victim to victim smh kinda fucked but anyone who has been abused should also be on a list and monitored tbh

What the fuck could make u want to kill at that age tho

Remember these times there wasn't even any Internet in this country or computer games to be blaming this shit on

This is why it's so sad from both sides

Any kid who does that at that age must have been FUCKED. Cant even imagine what his home life was like, bunking school pre-teens, to kill people?...not normal stuff

Wouldnt be surprised if he was abused at home

At the time i vaguely remember them blaming the actions of the killers on certain horror movies they had been allowed to watch.
