By Louise Saunders

They shocked their fans and fellow music industry stalwarts alike when they announced their surprise split earlier this week.

And Oritsé Williams showed just how emotional he was about JLS coming to an end when he broke down in tears during an appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man on Wednesday evening.

Discussing the group's decision to part ways following a farewell arena tour and greatest hits album later this year, the 26-year-old singer had to be comforted by bandmate Marvin Humes as he welled up in front of the cameras.

Emotions running high: Oritsé Williams broke down in tears as he discussed the JLS shock split during an appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man on Wednesday evening

JB Gill explained to show host Alan Carr: 'It’s Ortise’s baby effectively, you know. He brought us together.'

As the star struggled to contain his emotions, Marvin elaborated: 'It’s an emotional decision. We’re best friends, we’re brothers, the bond between us is indescribable.

'We’ve been through so much since we first came together and no one would have dreamed what we achieved could be possible, and of course for it to all end was a massively emotional decision, and it wasn’t one that was taken lightly.

'Best friends': The boys admitted the decision to part ways after six years together wasn't one that was taken lightly

'We've had an incredible career for five years and we want to see it as a celebration that we’ve achieved so much. We wanted to go out on top and not be that act where people are like, "Oh bloody hell, it’s JLS again".'

Marvin - who is expecting his first child with The Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes - explained the boys faced a series of agonising decisions over the past few months, but decided they were keen to 'go out with a bang'.

He added: 'We started in 2007, the last six years has been all of our wildest dreams come true. We never wanted to overstay our welcome in the industry, Alan.

Chart-toppers: JLS admitted they are keen to bow out of the music industry while they are still at the top of their game

'We wanted to bow out at the top, and I think that we’ve got a massive tour at the end of the year, and we wanted to do that; remain friends, finish at the top and go out with a bang really.'

Oritse - who was the brainchild behind the band - admitted he became particularly emotional when he saw the impact the shock split had on the group's devastated fans as they arrived at the Channel 4 studios earlier in the day.

He said: 'Emotions are running high - it’s only because I saw the fans literally as we were coming in to see you and just seeing them cry and seeing them upset really evoked that emotion in me.

Emotional: The group were met by scores of devastated fans as they arrived to film their appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man on Wednesday

'But you know, it is a celebration, at the end of the day we’ve had an amazing six years together, we’ve been on a journey. Nobody else may have seen the hard times as well as the good times, but we’re the luckiest four boys in the world.'

Explaining they are still 'like a family', the boys told Chatty Man host Alan the time had come for them to focus on individual projectd.

JB said: 'We are a band but it’s like family and in a family you grow up, the teenagers go off to college, they do their own thing, they might move house.

Still involved: Despite splitting up, the band will continue to use their celebrity to do good

'We all live in similar areas and we’ll always have that bond, but it’s definitely time for us just to move on and I suppose be independent.'

After coming second to Alexandra Burke on The X Factor back in 2009, JLS went on to sell more than 10 million records, enjoying ten Top 10 hits, including five number one singles.

They also won numerous awards, including two Brit Awards for British Breakthough and British Single in 2010.

In addition to their music careers, JLS put their name to a range of merchandise, including dolls, perfume and even condoms.
