The message & culture is cancerous to it's main market (the youth)

Mainstream rap presents an overly detrimental message that promotes

a negative self image

glrofication of materialisation

glorification and desensitisation to violence

disrespect towrds [black] women

genral ignorance

lack of culture

Media is one of the biggest tools in shaping culture, and rap culture THE biggest media influence on the black world

So one of the biggest influences in black culture is all of the above

Mainstream rap yes. But Hip Hop is also the only rebellious form of Black music there is, RnB and Pop have done nothing for our culture either. You don't see rnb singers talking about 5 percent knowledge etc.

sh*t parents are more to blame than mindless music

Well no, and nobody in this thread has stated that rap is the sole cause of evil in the world, simply that it's an extremely negative influence

Yeah it has a negative influence but when you are of a certain age 17+ you should be able to know this shit is entertainment and not real life

most rap is parental advisory so it aint really the "rappers" responsibility that the kids parent is lackadaisical and their 13 year old is downloading & listening to Lil wayne or Jay-z

if parents were doing their jobs properly you really think what some minstrel on a tune would have so much influence?

Well Hip-Hop, blues, rock and roll etc, are all rebellious in their roots, but the former two are rarely ever played or cared about

I define mainstream rap as pop

There's a wierd genre of watered down music that is just one big fusion of everything

pop

RnB

Rap

reggae

blues

All watered down and stripped to the lowest common denominator, fused into one awful mess and pushed on everyone

/

Rap itself is far bigger and has a far more negative influence than the frankly awful brand of contemporary r&b that hangs about

Early r&B singers were Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye

Heavily soul influenced music played to real percussion, there was no talk of 5% or anything like that, but the music was sublime, created by talented writers and singers, I am really loathe to even call todays brand of music r&b

Incredibly naive viewpoint.

And who says the parents aren't influenced?

As I said, media drives culture. Sets trends. alters perceptions (on both sides of the fence) can plant thoughts in peoples heads & the power of propaganda is limitless

I\m sure every person on this site will sigh and know what the deal is when something like the daily mail prints article, after article, after article filled with skewed viewpoints and negativity towards blacks or Muslims  and people on this site will KNOW that it has an effect on the minds of the people who read it

What kind of effect do you think incessant messages telling girls they have to have a small waist, big bum, big breasts, straight hair do?

You can't blame hip hop for this though.

No other genre provides a way through for legitimately poor people, you can't blame Hip Hop in as much as you can blame capitalism and the American Dream.
