Peru Drug Mules

The pair's court hearing comes just a day after CCTV footage emerged which senior police officers claim shows Ms McCollum in the Peruvian capital on August 5 walking around freely - despite the women saying they were held at gunpoint on that day.

William Reid, the father of her co-accused, also responded following the emergence of photographs that allegedly show them posing on a balcony and on a beach with glasses of beer days before they were arrested at Lima airport.

Mr Reid, who is in Lima, said: "I believe the trip to the beach was part of a set-up that they asked them to smile to build up a portrayal of them as happy holidaymakers.

"I can only go by what I have been firmly told by the girls. The two girls' stories are very tight, very consistent, with a lot of detail and they seem to be telling the truth, as far as I can gauge."

:lmao:

Pleaded guilty (6 years sentence)

The two British women accused of trying to smuggle £1.5million of cocaine out of Peru will receive a dramatically shorter sentence then they could have after pleading guilty yesterday.

Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum Connolly admitted trying to board a flight from Lima to Spain on August 6 knowing they had 24lb of the class-A drug in their suitcases.

The maximum sentence they can receive is six years and eight months - but if they had pleaded not guilty and been convicted, they could have faced as much as 15 years in a Peruvian prison.

The women will be eligible for parole within three years, allowing them to return home, while it has also been suggested that they could be transferred to Britain to serve part of their sentences.

Guilty pleas by two women arrested trying to smuggle 11kg (24lbs) of cocaine out of Peru will not be accepted, the prosecution has said.

Michaella McCollum, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, and Melissa Reid, from Glasgow, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in front of a judge on Tuesday.

But anti-narcotics prosecutor Juan Rosas said on Wednesday that as the women only claimed partial guilt for their actions, the pleas would not be accepted by the prosecution.

Mr Rosas said that in order for proceedings to be concluded quickly both women must accept full responsibility for the charges against them.

"A new statement is required by the women and they will have to admit not only that they came here to traffic drugs but also that they did not tell the truth with respect to them being kidnapped, they have to make a full admission of responsibility for all of the charges brought by the prosecution," he said.

The prosecution maintains that McCollum and Reid made up a story about being kidnapped and threatened into attempt to smuggle the drugs, worth £1.5m, out of Peru on August 6.

Mr Rosas added: "If they continue to maintain this incredible version of events then the prosecution is not going to accept them taking advantage of a quick conclusion of proceedings."

They thought they could just plead guilty and get a quick sentence. Backfired
