There have been several of them, by the way

Linking homophobia, with arousal to gay stimuli

Part 1

Test subjects (self-indentifying heterosexual males aged 18-30) were first asked a series of questions, with their answers being measured against the Index of Homophobia scale - this consisted simply of a numerical value assigned to a number of multiple choice answers

For example

I would feel comfortable being friends with an open homosexual male

1. Strongly Agree

2. Agree

3. Neutral

4. Disagree

5. Strongly Disagree

There were 25 questions in total, others included 'I would feel disappointed if my child classified themselves as homosexual' and so on and so forth

At the end of the test, all the participants with Index scores higher than 50 were classified as 'homophobic', and all those who scored below 50, were classified as 'non-homophobic'

Part 2

Subjects were placed in a sound-proof room, and shown a 5 minute display of graphic, hetereosexual porn - they did this while wearing a Penile Plethysmophraph

medium_phallometry_128.jpg

This device is inserted over the penis, and measures the dilation of the blood vesels (i.e. the level of erection - this machine has been used to test whether or not Pedophiles have been successfully rehabilitated before releasing them into the community - they are shown a series of sexually suggestive (but not child porn of course) images, and depending their level of arousal, testers are able to gauge whether or not the offenders are lying or being truthful with regards to their desires)

So

The difference between homophobic, and non-homophobic males erection level during the tests watching heterosexual porn was negligible

Part 3

The test subjects were shown female-on-female homosexual porn - and again, despite one group being identified as homophobic, there was no difference in the dilation of the two sets of males (they were both, obviously aroused)

Part 4

In the last part of the test, both sets of men were shown a 5 minute clip of man-on-man homosexual pornography

The men who were identified as homophobic, exhibited TWICE the level of penile diameter when viewing the gay porn, than the non-homophobic group

This test has been replicated numerous times by several scientific and psychological bodies, and the results never change

The more outspoken a man is against homosexuals, the more likely it is that he himself harbours subconscious (or not) homosexual arousal

There have been numerous incidents of high level pastors & clerics who were massively vocal on the subject of the evils of homophobia, who later turned out to have been involved in affairs with gay men or escorts, some of which while married

It is quite evident that the level a level of vocal homophobia is a psychological reaction to a perceived threat to the individuals identity

SO

What do you make of this? What are your own feelings about homosexuality?

'The more outspoken a man is against homosexuals, the more likely it is that he himself harbours subconscious (or not) homosexual arousal'

Any elaborations on these kind of theories? I hear this a lot yet it always sounds a bit warped to me.

And is a homophobe having 'subconcious homosexual arousal' essentially a paradox

It's all chaotic

A paradox how? It's essentially a method of overcompensating for an internal insecurity

I suppose their lives/feelings could been seen as paradoxical or conflicted as homophobic behaviour will either CONSCIOUSLY or subconsciously be a method of compensating for the homosexual desires

The very reason they appear to be so outwardly homophobic is apparently often due to the internal feelings they have toward the subject

It can often be seen by them as something they fear  or something that is unacceptable/disgusting/forbidden, so these desires represent a very real threat to the persons sense of identity, place in a family or community & life in general

This sort of threat triggers the negative outward response to combat that the perceived danger to their identity

I definitely believe this is true, said as much earlier in the year.

Them actually being homosexual I'm not so sure of.

Oh no, that's a different matter entirely, I'm sure a fair amount of them ARE. And probably if they were less bigoted maybe more might become so, but I think it's just they feel a certain level of attraction / potential level of attraction, toward these sort of things

Whether that would mean they meet the classical definition of gay, is another matter..
