Compare Ireland at 22 to some of the players mentioned on here when they were 22.

Gerrard - 54 games, 7 goals

Lampard - 37 games, 9 goals

Iniesta - 56 games, 9 goals

Ballack - 37 games, 4 goals

Xavi - 44 games, 3 goals

and IMO the best and most underated player to play in the Premier League era and the best Englishman of his generation.

Scholes - 33 games, 6 goals

Stephen Ireland - 44 games, 13 goals (plus 13 assists!!)

Ireland will have a 20/20 season next season (20 goals and 20 assists) and he will pobably be in the top five for tackles won, interceptions, key passes again cos he really is superman!

Fabregas is a play maker, you won't see him bursting into the box very often.

Essien is more defensive

Ballack is possibly better

No offence mate, but I strongly, strongly, strongly disagree. Look at prozone stats and you'll see that Ballack and Essien cover far more ground per game (hence 'Box to box midfielder) than Ireland. You could argue that Ireland is technically more gifted, but those two would get in any team ahead of him (at the moment).

Xavi is a better midfielder but he won't get into the box as well.
