Something similar happened to me as I got an Italian passport and they used to have compulsory as well

 

I got out of it in the end but they told me If I ever went back there I would get arrested

 

Around that time the laws changed though and it became more laxed.

 

Funny thing was I was seriously considering doing it just for the hell of it but my Uncle advised against it said I would be subjected to Racism and abuse
