Some vetinary person claims slicing the throat of the animal inflicts unnecessary pain and they want to see it banned.

I think Denmark are in the process of banning halal and kosher meat

I'll dig up sources when I'm back cos I only have the iPhone but with regards to it being more hygienic it's fact that draining the blood straight from the throat is better than stunning it, killing it and chopping it up. Something to do with bacteria in the blood if I remember correctly.

Also the western method of slaughter is very inhumane as it often takes several stuns and sometimes the animal is only partially stunned while being dissected.
