Manchester United ‘close to signing Arturo Vidal with £32m plus Patrice Evra bid’

Manchester United are on the cusp of agreeing a deal with Juventus to sign their powerful midfielder Arturo Vidal.

United have been holding talks with Vidal’s agent in the last few days and now Chilean outlet La Tercera reports an agreement is very close to sign the player.

The newspaper says the deal is worth £32million plus Patrice Evra to Juventus, and will be finalised after the World Cup.

Louis van Gaal made Vidal his number one transfer target after being appointed United boss and he now looks like getting his man.

Vidal is currently on holiday but has reportedly set his heart on a switch to England and is on standby to travel for a medical.

The Chilean press had appeared to be far behind their Italian counterparts in reports on the future of Arturo Vidal, but that's changed somewhat over the past few days.

La Tercera published a story on Friday claiming Vidal's agent had almost sorted out a transfer to Manchester United.

They stated a fee of $55m, which at current exchange rates is about £32m. La Tercera explained that Manchester United would make more serious moves for the player once Louis van Gaal was back from the World Cup and had already been in contact with Vidal's agent Fernando Felicevich.

The same newspaper said on Friday afternoon that Van Gaal had been obsessed with Vidal since his days managing Bayern Munich and there could be some truth in that. The Dutchman parted with Bayern Munich in April 2011 and the German club thought they had a deal for Vidal to join them that summer from Bayer Leverkusen, with him going back on it and joining Juventus instead. If Bayern Munich assumed they had sorted a deal then that could have easily dated back a couple of months to Van Gaal's time at the club.

On Saturday another Chilean newspaper El Mecurio had some really interesting claims. They said that Manchester United requested any medical records the Chilean national team had relating to Vidal's knee. The Juventus midfielder had a knee operation before the World Cup and it's suggested Manchester United want to be sure he's over that before getting to the final stages of a transfer.

This is quite some claim, you simply can't go around asking for private medical records on a whim and there would almost certainly have to be the agreement of the player to do so. That either casts doubt on El Mecurio's claims or suggests Vidal quite fancies the move.

In Italy Tuttosport say that Manchester City are now also interested but that could be to up perceived demand and increase price.

According to the Guardian, Manchester United spent months of last season scouting Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, only to conclude that he was unsuitable for the Premier League.

An interesting snippet from Daniel Taylor, the Guardian's chief football correspondent, on Mats Hummels, the Germany and Borussia Dortmund centre-half who most newspapers seem to agree features highly on Louis van Gaal's summer wishlist. Asked in a pre-World Cup final webchat whether Germany "have more or less already won the World Cup, he politely disagreed, and then added:

I also told a little story in a preview of the Germany-Brazil semi-final about Mats Hummels (and yes, I know it's strange identifying him when he has had such a distinguished tournament). But Manchester United were looking at him an awful lot when David Moyes was in charge. They thought he had a lot of qualities but they concluded that he lacked mobility and would struggle in the Premier League against Suarez or Sturridge-type strikers.

"He can't run" was how one of the people involved in that process put it. That was from several months of scouting. You or I may not agree. Van Gaal might not agree either. But that was certainly United's view at the time. So Argentina - if they play with any ambition - should believe they can get behind Hummels and Boateng.

Obviously, just as Moyes's staff formed their opinions on Hummels from careful and considered observation, so too will everybody else have formed their opinions on Moyes's staff in much the same way. But we bring this to your attention because, well, it's interesting. Plainly Van Gaal (along with Juergen Klopp and Franz Beckenbauer and Jogi Loew and Hummels' myriad other admirers) either disagrees, or thinks Hummels has enough else about him to compensate for whatever lack of mobility he might possess.

All that said, the noises on Hummels and Dortmund have been very much of the 'interested but probably not happening' sort, so it's not likely we'll get to put the previous regime's theory to the test. Unless Daniel Sturridge pops off to Bayern Munich or something.

Them revolutions there, pmsl

Manchester United offer £39.8m for Vidal and will pay him £7m a year

Has there ever been a club with more transfer sagas than Manchester United? Sneijder, Hazard, Thiago, and now Arturo Vidal. Since the announcement of Louis Van Gaal, British journalists seem to have lost some of the access to transfer news that was available whilst David Moyes was in charge. It would now appear that no one has a clue what is going on behind the scenes at Manchester United.

So far, the fans have received many conflicting reports from the British press. Some are saying that Manchester United aren't “actively pursuing” Arturo Vidal, whilst some claimed that a deal was close to being done only to backtrack less than 24 hours later and say that the deal was off.

In Italy, there is a bit more optimism that a deal could be happening. Whilst the likes of Di Marzio say that there has been no contact between Manchester United and Juventus on the topic of the Chilean midfielder, Tuttosport have come out today and claimed that Vidal's agent, Fernando Felicevich, is on the phone pretty much daily to Juventus to try and force a deal through for his client.

The latest to come out of Italy is from Alfredo Pedullà, a seemingly well respected freelance journalist. Just like Di Marzio, Pedullà has his own website, which he uses to break transfer news and publish articles, and last night wrote an article on the Vidal to Manchester United transfer saga.

In said article, Pedullà claims that contact has indeed been made between the two clubs and that Manchester United have offered Juventus €50m (£39.87m) for the player; a fee well above the £34m the British press claim Manchester United are refusing to meet. On top of that, Pedullà writes that the player has been handed a contract of around €8-9m/season (£6.38-£7.14m/season), which would double the salary he is currently earning at Juventus.

Pedullà continues by saying that the money would allow Juventus to strengthen further, as well as replacing the Chilean midfielder who has been a key figure at the club ever since signing from Leverkusen in 2011. He ends by saying that, due to the large amount of money offered “there is no getting around it, Juventus will think seriously about this offer”.

It is worth noting that Pedullà doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to Manchester United transfers. Back in January, the Italian journalist wrote that David Moyes was, at the time, interested in Hellas Verona's Italian striker Jorginho. He also wrote back in June that Manchester United were very interested in Fredy Guarin. So far, neither of those two transfers have happened.

A lot has happened since then, and it could be that Pedullà is on the money for this one. There are so many conflicting reports that it is nigh on impossible to predict what is going to happen. We'll keep an eyeout, as always, on any developments in the Vidal saga and keep you updated until the player either signs a new contract at Juventus or moves to Manchester. We promise.

With the conflicting reports between the British, Italian and Chilean media one thing to remember is that Van Gaal said this a few weeks ago...

"Chile have very dangerous players," he told reporters. "I always wanted to buy Vidal when he was at Bayer Leverkusen but he went to Juventus."

"I like a lot of Chile players and they always play an attacking style. It will be difficult for the Netherlands but we have confidence in the three games we have to play."
