Veron

19 posts in this topic

Why did he fail to deliver in the PL? started well at United first 3 months was good but after that he didn't deliver. Was given another chance at Chelsea but struggled. When he signed in 2001 for United everyone was excited big fee paid and at that time he was world class, was hitting his peak 26 years old

He shouldn't have flopped at United Scholes was moved from CM to number 10 so Veron could play CM he played in a Midfield with Keane, Giggs and Becks. Them times United dominated possesion against any PL team they played. He didn't have much pace around him tho Giggs was the only 1

That game against Tottenham tho was 3-0 down at half time and won 5-3 Veron played a part>>>>>>

He went to United 5 years too early, at a time when the PL philosophy was still very much the best example of the current Enlgish football stereotype that exists. This was before Ferguson learned from repeated schoolings in Europe, before he hired Queiroz, before he understood the importance of keeping the ball in midfield, especially in Europe.

I believe Roy Keane also stated in his own book that Keane's insistance on playing in the deeper role, which saw Veron shifted high up the pitch as an AM, and even wide-right, played a large part in his downfall.

Right player, wrong time, used wrongly.

It was Scholes that played CAM role behind Ruud. Veron was next to Keane in CM true that Keane had became very defensive and less box to box then but that should have suited Veron for Keane to do the holding and defensive work while he could focus more on attacking. He wasn't playing as high up/advanced as Scholes

Agree with fight weight.

plus he didn't really want to come in the first place, add to that the fact that it would've been harder to settle then than it is now with the amount of panish speaking players at the club and in Manchester in general.

The problem was balance. On paper the obvious formation would have been 3-5-2. In fact I bet loads of you tried it in your respective management games and quickly learned that you need fullbacks that weren't Beckham and Giggs. So that formation went out the window if it didn't work for you.

Sticking with a 4-4-2 meant Veron next to Keane. Doing so meant you missed the player behind the striker.

Veron next to Scholes meant you didn't have the defensive midfield capabilities.

Veron could do what both Keane and Scholes did, but *he couldn't do either at the same level.

*Some might consider Veron a better offensive player than Scholes.

Scholes played behind Ruud bro it was a 4-4-1-1 it was Veron and Keane in CM Keane handling the defensive duties more than Veron. Sometimes Scholes dropped bac in CM to make it a 3 but for the most part he played as the number 10 behind Ruud for the two seasons Veron was at the club
