How Lazio’s Felipe Anderson became Serie A’s latest superstar

The Derby della Capitale took place in Italy’s Serie A last weekend, with Roma fighting back to draw 2-2 with bitter rivals Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma were the home side for the match, though both teams share the Olimpico, and went in at half-time trailing 2-0 before Francesco Totti scored twice to salvage a valuable point against their bitter rivals.

Totti’s second, which levelled the scores, saw him become the derby’s joint-top goalscorer, with 11 goals against Lazio. Dino Da Costa also hit eleven past the Biancocelesti during the 1950s and early 1960s. The 38-year-old forward celebrated his second goal by taking a selfie on the pitch, ensuring he dominated the headlines after the game.

But before Totti’s brace, before he equalled the record and his celebration went viral, Lazio’s Felipe Anderson had been the star of the show. The Brazilian midfielder provided a sublime assist for Stefano Mauri to knock home the opener, before cracking in a second from range himself minutes later.

He was withdrawn after 64 minutes and Roma fought their way back into the game, but the first half had been all about him – much like Lazio’s previous five Serie A games have been all about Anderson.

In his last five Serie A appearances, Anderson has been directly involved in ten goals for Lazio, scoring five of them and creating five more. To say he is enjoying a purple patch at the moment may be an understatement. During that time Lazio have scored 12 times, so Anderson has had a hand in all but two of their last 12 goals.

Since December 6th (five Serie A games have been played since then), no player has registered more assists in the Italian league than Anderson (five), nor has any player scored more goals (five, though Sassuolo’s Simone Zaza is level).

No player has completed more take ons than Anderson during that time period either (30).

Against Roma, the 21-year-old Santos product created the opener with an inch-perfect chipped pass into the path of Mauri, who knocked home from close range.

Anderson not only had the confidence to attempt the pass, but the ability to pull it off and he put his ability beyond question with his goal. He picked the ball up outside Roma’s box and unleashed a low drive with his left foot into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Anderson hit one from a similar distance in the 3-0 win at home to Sampdoria, whilst also providing two assists in that game. Not only is he good at shooting from range, but he can pick an incisive pass and create chances for his teammates. His goal against Inter, in the 2-2 draw in the build-up to Christmas, saw him weave into the box and beat several players before shooting back across himself into the near bottom corner.

He is technically sublime. A creator who is comfortable passing to feet or into space, running with the ball and shooting from distance – and he is still only 21.

Three players have created more chances for Lazio over the course of the season, than Anderson’s 15: Antonio Candreva (25), Senan Lulic (23) and Marco Parolo (19). But none have created more than the Brazilian in the last five games (eight) than Anderson, showing what fine form he is in.

Anderson also has an impressive 59% shot accuracy this season. Only Filip Djordjevic (62%) and Miroslav Klose (88%) have a higher accuracy, out of Lazio’s player with five or more appearances in Serie A this season.

He has been in sensational form over the past five games, but clearly has had an effect on Lazio’s fortunes over the course of the season, featuring in 16 of their 18 games and featuring near the top of the shooting accuracy and chance creation charts.

Judging by his performance against Roma, Anderson will not be slowing down any time soon and will continue to impress in the Italian capital. It may be a matter of time before one of Europe’s elite pluck him from the Eternal City.

Moves like Pato(has a football brain unlike Pato)

So when the pace goes he can easily re-invent himself

Hybrid of Kaka e Pato

Him and Ravel b2b could be a shutdown

Morrison just needs to sort his mentality out because it has always been a mental thing in Italy.

Reminds me you know on FM

There is three lists of attributes

First one is La Liga

Second one is Serie A

Third one is PL

"Chelsea scouts have been watching Lazio forward Felipe Anderson as they prepare to strengthen their squad this summer.

The Blues are thought to have had representatives at Lazio’s recent 2-0 win at Torino, in which Anderson claimed both goals, as well as at the 4-0 demolition of Fiorentina on March 9."
