RAF jets were scrambled on Wednesday after two Russian military aircraft were seen off the Cornwall coast, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The Russian Bear bombers did not enter sovereign airspace, it said.

On the same day, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon warned that Russia's President Putin posed a "real and present danger" to three Baltic states.

Prime Minister David Cameron said the Russian action should not be dignified with "too much of a response".

He added: "I think what this episode demonstrates is that we do have the fast jets, the pilots, the systems in place to protect the UK.

"I suspect the Russians were trying to make some sort of a point."

BBC political correspondent Ross Hawkins said the appearance of Russian aircraft near the UK coast was a show of strength from the Russians, and such incidents were carried out with political intent because they would be reported on.

Our correspondent said it was part of a trend which had seen Russian aircraft flying close to UK airspace, and there had also been similar incidents in Europe.

It's coming bruhs

Russia have been doing this for months now. Constantly in the news, the Navy had to escort one of their ships the other day as well. They seem to be testing the waters everywhere.

Heard this on QT yesterday.

Putin is mocking, but he is going to lose in the long run. He cannot defeat economic sanctions from the West. Eventually his own people will rise against him.

Most of the Russian tech is shit.

These Bears are the equivalent to the USA B-52s, but shitter.

I only rate their Su-27 - Su-35s and that's only due to their manoeuvrability at low speeds.

Saying that, all these NATO countries need to step their aircraft inventory up. We're getting the JSF but America ripped us off with that too.

Pisses me off that we lose our ideas and tech to the yanks, always one sided.

Defo not true. The ones that do are idiots who believe in Western conspiracy being the biggest evil since Eve ate the apple.

bump, happened again...

RAF Typhoon jets have been scrambled after Russian military planes were identified flying close to UK airspace.

The Ministry of Defence revealed the news hours after it emerged warships from Russia's Northern Fleet entered the English Channel ahead of planned anti-aircraft and anti-submarine drills.

Interfax news agency reported the vessels were due to carry out the military exercises in the north Atlantic, but HMS Argyll was deployed to monitor the destroyer and Typhoons were sent from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland.

In a statement on the latest incident, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighter aircraft were launched today after Russian aircraft were identified flying close to UK airspace.

"The Russian planes are being escorted by the RAF in the UK area of interest."
