Drug-driving laws introduced as drivers warned of zero-tolerance approach.

Drivers have been warned they face prosecution if they are caught behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs.

New regulations have come into force today establishing new limits for eight illegal drugs and eight prescription drugs.

The levels for illegal drugs - including heroin, cocaine and cannabis - mean there will be a virtually zero-tolerance approach for drivers apprehended while under the influence of those substances.

Police will be able to use "drugalysers" to screen for cannabis and cocaine at the roadside.

David Taylor, professor of psychopharmacology at Kings College, London and a member of the Department of Transport's advisory panel on drug driving, said the rules would work as a much stronger deterrent and make prosecutions much easier.

Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme he said: "It's a zero-tolerance approach."

He said any exposure would render people over the limit and would leave them over the limit for up to 36 hours.

To me it's still not clear if you smoke cannabisb(obviously it stays in your system for a while, so are you being prosecuted or not) I can't work it out but surely not that would be stupid.

What's that 36 hour comment about?
