Chelsea could still qualify for Europe next season

Chelsea could still qualify for the Europa League next season despite their dreadful Premier Leaguecampaign.

If other results go their way, the Blues can still finish as high as seventh in the table - and there is a scenario in which the top seven teams in the league will all play in Europe next season.

Currently, the top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the Champions League, while the fifth and sixth placed teams qualify for the Europa League.

However, if Capital One Cup winners Manchester City finish in the top five and Manchester United finish in the top six AND win the FA Cup, then a Europa League spot will go to the team that finishes seventh.

That is because the winners of the two domestic cups are automatically entered into the following season's Europa League.

If Liverpool win this year's Europa League and finish outside of the top four, there will be FIVE English teams in next season's Champions League - the top four Premier League sides and Liverpool themselves.

However, if Liverpool win the Europa League and finish in fifth, sixth or seventh, their spot in next season's Europa League will not go to another Premier League team.

It will just mean the Premier League will next season have five representatives in the Champions League and two in the Europa League.

Manchester City's Champions League elimination in midweek ends any possibility of a team finishing in fourth position and ending up in the Europa League.

If City had won the Champions League and Liverpool won the Europa League but both finished outside the top four, then both teams would have qualified for next season's competition as well as the the top three teams in the Premier League

Full permutations

  • 1st: Automatic Champions League qualification
  • 2nd: Automatic Champions League qualification
  • 3rd: Automatic Champions League qualification
  • 4th: Qualification to Champions League third qualifying round
  • 5th: Automatic Europa League qualification
  • 6th: Qualification to Europa League third qualifying round (if Manchester City finish in the top four)
  • 7th: Qualification to Europa League qualifiers (if Manchester United win FA Cup AND finish in top five, and Manchester City finish in top four)
