Most of these rappers are as formulaic as these Hit pop producers, there is very little creativity displayed when it comes to making conscious music which is why it doesn't resonate with the younger audience. Gambino proved it could be done in a way, albeit with the aid of the music video. Similarly, being from a certain environment shouldn't limit the material a person has access to or can use in his art. It's a lazy excuse, it just takes imagination, there was a time when this was the writers/poets greatest resource. If Mary Shelley used this excuse she would have never written Frankenstein or Keats Ode to a Nightingale. David Ruffin and many other Motown acts had chequered past's but their artform wasn't defined by the inner city environment they came from and the lasting legacy of Motown is one of love and black excellence. Glad you used the word glorification though, it's this imo which makes Hip Hop and it's derivatives so destructive, tantamount to genocide. It's just a shame we need the police to get involved and can't turn our own backs/denounce the crud for the sake of our kids and community. That isn't a self sustaining solution imo.
