UNITED are being taken to court by an angry Reds' fan over their controversial automatic cup ticket scheme.County Court papers have been served on the club by Old Trafford season-ticket holder John Mayall.
AFTER the initial furore over the Glazer takeover at Man Utd it seemed most fans had come to terms with it and some even thought it wasnââ¬â¢t so bad after all. That was until nowââ¬Â¦My Utd fan colleague Mr Orr brought a ticket scandal to my attention and it was discussed on a phone-in last night " what is proposed is ridiculous! Most clubs have a cup priority scheme for season ticket holders which they can sign up for and will automatically get tickets sent to them for every home cup game.At Everton I donââ¬â¢t do this because, although I do tend to watch all home games, you never know what will crop up, and as a season ticket holder you get first refusal of tickets anyway. So imagine my surprise when I was told Utd are making the cup priority scheme mandatory for all season ticket holders at Old Trafford. This means not only will fans have to fork out for more costly season tickets " at a time when most clubs are freezing and/or dropping prices " but they will have to pay for all home cup games. This means many loyal fans will be priced out and this is a crying shame for the game.Yes, the tickets will be snapped up by other fans " bit thatââ¬â¢s not the point " the ordinary fan is being priced out and I think the FA or Premier League should step in and get this changed. It seems after smoothing over relations the Glazers are bleeding the fans dry and maybe those who defected to FC United knew what was coming.I just hope the same happens at Liverpool with the American owners and their fans get ripped off as well!It seems football is losing touch with its roots more than ever and if it isnââ¬â¢t reined in it will become a sport for the rich and famous and will lose its appeal to many working and even middle-class fans. Are you a United supporter? What do you think?
Fans' group Shareholders United have hit out at claims Manchester United fans face huge rises in ticket prices after Malcolm Glazer's takeover. Reports say the average ticket will go from ã30 to ã46 over five years. "How is he going to fill an expanded stadium when fans are leaving in droves?" SU chair Nick Towle asked BBC Radio Five Live. "They are so disillusioned with the massive increases it will just turn more and more fans off." Andy Mitten, editor of fanzine United We Stand, added on Five Live: "Some of the games have barely sold out in recent years. "Are home games on a Tuesday night against Charlton or Portsmouth going to sell out with the extra ticket price? I'm not convinced." United supporters will also be alarmed at suggestions that manager Sir Alex Ferguson is to be limited to a transfer fund of ã25m a season for the next five years. "The transfer budget has been very subtly expressed as a cap. It could be ã25m, it could be a pound," added Towle. "The drive for commercialisation is becoming too much for most fans," added Towle. "It's really beginning to create a big problem, and that's just before fans stop buying the products and merchandise, which will also increase in price. "Our campaign to urge fans to exercise their consumer choice and just not buy the products of the club or the products of the company and the products of the sponsors is going to grow and grow." A spokesman for Mr Glazer's business told the BBC nothing was finalised. "Things are still up in the air. Plans have not been finalised," said the spokesman, who represents Mr Glazer's son Joel. The spokesman also dismissed speculation that Sir Bobby Charlton will be axed from the United board.
