Black boys need role models: Report

Black boys need more role models who do not glamorise crime, guns or drugs, according to a new report.(Advertisement)It will call for the creation of a National Role Model programme to give the youngsters figures from their own community to look up to.The independent Reach report was commissioned by the Department for Communities and Local Government and its findings are expected to be welcomed by ministers. A copy of the full report will be presented to Communities Secretary Hazel Blears at its launch in Manchester. It says that tackling underachievement and a "culture of low aspiration" in black boys could boost the economy by £24 billion in the next 50 years. It suggests a five-point plan for how communities, local agencies, parents and the Government can work together to improve the life chances of young black men.It also recommends the creation of a national umbrella organisation to provide support to the many small voluntary groups around the country that it says face "significant barriers" to getting government funding. The report advocates stronger relationships between parents of black boys and schools to improve educational aspirations. It also urges Ofsted to provide greater consistency in the way schools are inspected to ensure all schools seek to close the academic gap between black and white pupils.Chairman of the Reach group, Clive Lewis, who runs The Men's Room charity for black men, said: "We need to focus our collective effort on raising the aspirations and achievement of black boys and young men to enable them to be more connected and engaged with wider society and more able to make an even greater contribution economically, culturally and politically to Britain."Often the only well-known images of black men are those of sportsmen and rap artists. But black boys and young men desperately need a greater diversity of images and portrayals, showing that black men can be, and are, successful as in a wide range of careers including business, teaching, the law and health care."

if u check it deeply black boys are very smart academically til the age of about 9then something happens i dont know what it is but then they start to slouchby the time they reach secondary school things get worse I dont wanna say itsinstitualized racism but it is teachers, everythingeven on tv now when I watch shows and it says this person is doing a good thing for their community and when you check it deeply they are doing something any normal person would do.black people get bad press I see some small changes who remembers the 80's and the sun come out with the front page title ''discrace to his race''after the broadwater farm riotsalot of heat has been taken of blacks recently and now they r going for brown brothers (muslims, sikh, hindu dont matter ur not liked if u actually read the sun paper they have the most racist stuff about muslims in there nearly everyday)Its like when you get stopped by police all the time go into a shop to buy something and security is following you aroundwalk past people and they watch you like you want to rob themall them things f*ck up a persons mentality and after a while they we act in that wayits like guys who beat up their women and tell her she is nothing worthless etc after a while she starts to belive thatits to late for things to change that money for these reports etc is better off building better homes and facilities for the general public

yeah gray but how can they be like this and just turn into under achievers
Many intelligent black boys become underachievers for many reasons. One prominent reason is status. Status that they do not feel they can get anywhere, but the streets.I could write essays about it all day long ya na, but I'll save it until it's actually going to make some difference.

Yeah but why are they pushed to look to the streets for "status" ?

Well that's where the institutional racism comes in, partly.
