Bronx rapper Remy Ma was convicted on four charges of assault and today (Mar 27) by a Manhattan Supreme Court grand jury. The rapper faces five to 25 years in jail.The decision just two days after attorneys for both the defense and prosecution delivered their closing statements.Remy Ma was convicted of two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion, and criminal possession of a weapon.She was found not guilty of gang assault and witness tampering.On trial since March 10, the former Terror Squad artist born Remy Smith stood accused of shooting her childhood friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in a July 2007 dispute over $3000.Barnes-Joseph spent three weeks in the hospital following the incident, which left her with two gunshot wounds to the abdomen.The victim underwent three separate surgeries to repair the damage.During his closing statement on Monday (Mar 24), Remy’s attorney Ivan Fisher maintained that the shooting was accidental, an argument he says was supported by Barnes-Joseph’s March 14 testimony.Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Michael McIntosh, on the other hand, argued that the shooting was the direct result of Smith’s deliberate decision to take “an illegal .45-caliber automatic and [load] it with hollow-point bullets and go into Ms. Joseph’s car.” He added that her decision to flee the scene of the crime was further proof of the rapper’s guilt.Remy Ma faces up to 25 years in prison.No word yet as to whether Barnes-Joseph will refile a $20 million civil suit against Remy Ma in connection with the shooting.
Grammy nominated rapper Remy Ma awaited her fate in Manhattan's Criminal Court today (Mar. 27) as jury deliberations came to an end with a guilty ruling. SOHH was on the scene as the verdict was handed down.Remy Ma and her lawyer Ivan Fisher seemed in good spirits as they entered the court earlier this afternoon. While waiting for the jury to announce the verdict, Remy appeared comfortable and relaxed as she conversed with her defense team.The trial began at noon. As the diverse jury, consisting of many cultures and ages, read their verdict, Remy placed her head on the table in shock. She was found guilty on four charges, including assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon anmd coercion. She was not charged with gang assault, witness intintimidation or witness tampering from a seperate incident.Remy was then cuffed and escorted out of the court. As the door closed, she could be heard crying out, "Oh my God." A female officer rushed to calm her down.Remy's brother hollered out, "This is bullsh*t," as the verdict was being read. The judge ordered him to be escorted out of the court room. Remy's stylist cried."We are very disappointed with the jury's verdict," Fisher told SOHH. Remy wasn't ready for this. We plan to appeal all of the assault related charges."Makeda Barnes-Joseph and her supporters celebrated upon hearing the verdict, while Barnes-Joseph's mother cried tears of joy."This is wonderful," the plaintiff's mother reacted to the guilty verdict. "God is good. There is no secret to what God can do. He reveals everything."Judge Rena K. Uvillier denied a request by Remy's lawyer, to allow her time at home before being sentenced."Remy didn't expect this," Fisher continued. "She didn't tell her 8-year-old son, who she left this morning [she would not be returning home].""They all lied," Remy's brother told SOHH in an outrage outside of the Manhattan court building. "They lied to the police and they lied on the stand," he added as he told a reporter to stop snapping photos.Remy stood trial for shooting former friend Barnes-Joseph in New York City's Meatpacking district, last July. The incident occurred after Remy discovered $3,000 missing from her purse and accused the plaintiff of stealing the money.Remy faces up to 25 years in prison. A sentence date has not yet been determined.

Remy Ma's future hangs in the balance as she awaits sentencing. A day after being found guilty, SOHH caught up with the Bronx rapper's defense attorney, Ivan Fisher, to find out how Remy is holding up."She's extremely upset," Fisher told SOHH. "She's calmer now, but she's broken hearted. She was crying and hugging me. She was crushed!"The Grammy nominated rapper was convicted yesterday (Mar. 27) of shooting her former friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen last July, in a dispute over $3,000 Remy accused the victim of stealing. Remy wept as jurors handed down her guilty verdict of first-degree assault and weapon charges.Judge Rena Uviller denied Fisher's request to allow Remy time at home before the April 23 sentencing and went on to order the Bronx-bomber to be jailed without bail."I disagree strongly with the verdict," Fisher said. "They were wrong."Remy faces up to 25 years in prison. The stunned mother leaves behind her 8-year-old son, who she never told that she might be going to jail."I've spoke to her boyfriend and he's attempting to responsibly take care of the issues in Remy's life that were left unintended," Fisher said from his midtown office. "[Like] taking care of her son, figuring what to do with her house and stuff like that."Fisher and his defense team plan to appeal the assault charges. "We got pretty strong issue for the appeal," he said. "We're hopeful we'll get her to trial and win."Barnes-Joseph and her supporters celebrated yesterday upon hearing the verdict. Just days after being found guilty on four counts of assault, Bronx-bred rapper Remy Ma has turned to fans in hopes that their support will help shorten the 25 year sentence she faces next month.According to New York's Daily News, over the weekend the Grammy nominated rapper's MySpace page posted a message of endorsement aimed directly at her core fan base, pleading for admirers to send nice letters about her in hopes of receiving a reduced sentence."Please write letters about how Remy and her music has positively affected you, influenced you, inspired you, etc... in hopes that the judge will be lenient in Remy's upcoming sentencing," the note read.On Thursday March 27, a Manhattan jury convicted Remy (born Reminisce Smith) of first-degree assault and weapons charges for shooting her former friend in the abdomen last July in a beef over the rapper missing $3,000.The MySpace message concluded "Thank you for all your support." Letters are asked to be sent to [email protected] Supreme Court Judge Rena Uviller is set to hand the embattled rapper a sentence on April 23. Uviller denied Remy's attorney, Ivan Fisher's request for Remy to spend the remaining days, until the sentencing, at home with her son.
