New Street Fighter Film

March 25, 2008 - If you're like us, you've developed a love-hate relationship with game-to-film adaptations. They aren't always great -- some of them have been downright awful -- but there's something undeniably cool about seeing your favorite videogame characters brought to life on the big screen. It'd be nice, though, if Hollywood actually got it right a little more often. That's why we're glad that Street Fighter, Capcom's long-running fighting game series, is getting a movie do-over thanks to Fox and Hyde Park Entertainment. But will the new version be any better than the silliness that was the Jean Claude Van Damme Street Fighter debacle of 1994? That remains to be seen, but we've got our fingers crossed. Here's how the project is shaping up thus far...Street Fighter is filming as you read this in Bangkok, Thailand. Yes, at this very moment Smallville star Kristin Kreuk, who plays Chun-Li in the flick, is probably doing lightning kicks on somebody's head. Before it's all said and done the production has plans to shoot in Hong Kong and Vancouver. Fox will release the movie in theaters next year. The StoryThe plot for the new Street Fighter has been kept mostly under wraps, but we do know that the movie centers on the game's prolific female fighter, Chun Li, who sets out on a quest for justice. In fact, the movie's full title is Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. The whole character-centric angle sounds like a good idea to us and we wouldn't be surprised if the film's backers are hoping to continue the series by focusing on a different character in each subsequent film. But this one has to be good enough to justify making more.If we had to speculate about the story, we wouldn't be surprised if it begins with Chun-Li on a search for clues to her father's death. As in Street Fighter Alpha 2, information she receives from Gen could lead her to M. Bison, whom she confronts. He admits killing her father and makes quick work of her. Defeated and with tears in her eyes, Chun-Li vows revenge. But again, that's all speculation. We'll break down the entire list of known characters and cast members for you below, but it's worth noting here that Ryu and Ken, the game's two main protagonists, are glaringly absent. What's up with that? The FilmmakersPolish cinematographer-turned-director Andrzej Bartkowiak was hired to direct the flick. He directed the game-to-film adaptation of Doom, as well as Cradle 2 the Grave, Exit Wounds, and Romeo Must Die. He worked as a cinematographer on three flicks that were nominated for Best Picture: The Verdict, Terms of Endearment, and Prizzi's Honor. We haven't seen the script he's working with, but let's hope that the screenplay by Justin Marks is up to snuff. Marks has several hot projects in development, but none of his feature scripts have made it to the big screen yet. His fully realized work consists of three short film collaborations with writer-director Brad Furman. The most recent was a 2003 short about sexual abuse called Unbroken, which starred The OC's Rachel Bilson.Marks' work on the development side is considerably hotter. He's written a pair of scripts that should get genre fans jazzed as they're both based on popular toy lines/cartoons from the '80s: Voltron: Defender of the Universe and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Marks also worked with David Goyer on the script for Super Max, the planned Green Arrow movie.
Cast & CharactersKristin Kreuk | Chun-Li -- Most famous for playing Lana Lang on The CW's Smallville, Kristin Kreuk plays the film's main character, Chun-Li. Will she be rocking the trademark "ox horn" hairdo? We've yet to find out. We've seen Kreuk fight on Smallville plenty of times and she's no slouch. Also, she's like totally hot. It works for us.street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-20080325044826749.jpgNeal McDonough | M. Bison -- You might recognize McDonough from bit parts in films such as The Hitcher remake, Flags of Our Fathers and as Lieutenant Hawk in Star Trek: First Contact. He was also in Band of Brothers. The guy has just the right look to play Psycho Power-using villain M. Bison.street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-20080325044827452.jpgChris Klein | Nash -- Marine Charlie Nash will played by American Pie and Election star Chris Klein. He's totally not blonde like the game character, but that's an easy fix. In fact, as long as he doesn't transform into a mutated beast like in the prior version, we're willing to forgive just about anything.street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-20080325051447972.jpgMicheal Clark Duncan | Balrog -- Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Clarke Duncan, star of The Green Mile and Armageddon, seems well cast as boxer Balrog. First of all, he's freakin' huge. And Clarke Duncan's former-career training as a bodyguard for the likes of LL Cool J and Notorious B.I.G., will no doubt come in handy. We can't wait to see him do a Buffalo Headbutt.street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-20080325051446831.jpgTaboo | Vega -- Taboo, whose real name is Jamie Luis Gomez, from the Black Eyed Peas will play vain Spaniard Vega. We can't speak for his acting ability, but Taboo is a good fit for the part in many ways. His dance moves are often Kung-Fu inspired and he's known to be a practitioner of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do martial arts system. He shouldn't have any trouble adapting to Vega's arranged ninjutsu style, and we expect him to wear the mask and claws well.street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-20080325051444940.jpgRick Yune | Gen -- Asian American actor Rick Yune, who has previously appeared in Die Another Day and The Fast and the Furious, will play master assassin Gen. At age 36, the good-looking Yune wouldn't have been our first pick for the gnarled, mystical warrior. They've either substantially younged-up the character for the movie or Yune is going to be in make-up for a long time.street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-20080325051446018.jpgThose are the main members of the cast, but we've also learned that Chinese actress Josie Ho will star in an as-yet-unknown role.
Finally a film where the characters actually look like the people.

What're you talking about, Guile is a constant thorn in the side of Bison and Shadoloo, he always duppies them with Cammy (when she's not a brainwashed pyschopath) and Charlie.Truesay though Chun-Li has a really good storyline with Bison merking her father and what not, still, not focusing it on one of the shotoken boys (Ken, Ryu, Akuma) will hurt in the long run, casting one of them california types with long blonde hair would rake in the female audience and guys would already be going just to see a Haduken, making the focal point an asian babe nah I don't see it doing too well or rather as well. The asian babe is hot though.
