New Arsenal signing Ignasi Miquel has been described by UD Cornella’s sporting director Andres Manzano as the new Lilian Thuram during an exclusive interview with setantasports.com.The 15-year-old defender agreed to move to Emirates Stadium in February from the Catalunyan club.Manzano has revealed that the player snubbed offers from Manchester United and from the Spanish top guns to opt for Arsene Wenger’s Gunners. The superkid decided to move to North London following a fruitful conversation with the French boss, who told him he would have his chance to become a professional player at Arsenal.Miquel is supposed to have been transferred for £900,000, but Manzano has refused to confirm the figure and instead announced that both clubs will intensify their relationship in the future in order to benefit from each other’s experience and facilities.“Arsenal watched him three times and a when he played for Spain as well,” Manzano told setantasports.com. “Their former player Francis Cagigao contacted us and asked us if we allowed Ignasi to visit their club and facilities.“We spoke to him while Manchester United, Valencia, Villarreal and Real Madrid were also very interested signing the defender.“Miquel is convinced that Arsenal will offer him a career, he knows he will have the chance to be played there, whereas at Barcelona it was impossible for him to show himself.“Maybe in four years he will be able to play for their first team. The fact Wenger took the time to speak to him made the difference, he told him he relies on him and that he has a future at the club.”The young defender could be loaned to a Spanish side like fellow countryman Fran Merida to Real Sociedad and Mexican Carlos Vela to Osasuna.“I do not know if he is going to be loaned,” Manzano added. “I am not sure of the length of his contract but I think it is a five-year deal.“We have an agreement not to communicate the price of the transfer and we will do exchanges between the two clubs.”The sporting director also revealed what kind of player Miquel is, and to which player he can be compared.“He is a centre back who can play on the left side as well,” he said. “He is good in the air thanks to his impressive physique, because he is very, very tall.“It is difficult to compare him to another player, but I think that Lilian Thuram is the player that resembles him the most.“He was with us in the last two seasons and arrived from Barcelona, where it was difficult for him to have minutes on the pitch. You know in Catalunya, in terms of football clubs, we are third after Barcelona and Espanyol.“At Cornella there is a tradition for education. Our academy is highly rated and there are plenty of scouts who watch our games. There are also some watching our training sessions, but less.“Many players from Cornella are now playing for Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Villarreal, and for the moment they play for their second teams.“Our Under-15 team is famous and we are proud to have players in the national team, demanded by many clubs.“We are very happy but most of all proud of our success. It is a good thing, but a bad thing as well because we lose our best elements.”
