Its basically EA's way of making sure they make money on pre-owned sales as its detrimental to their business, they recieve no money from it. Brand new copies of games will include a vip code (one time redeemable).

If someone buys it 2nd hand.. that code would (more than likely) be used up.. and the person will lose priveledges / features... be it online multiplayer or specific maps etc. So they would have to purchase an UNLOCK CODE for like £5-10, which is what you were talking about i think?

Other publishers are looking to follow suit (apparently)
