If you know SQL, would it be wise going for desktop support? Seems like a step down, no offence.

I'm in the limbo role do support/developing, know I'd rather get paid what the developers do, as you said money is mad.

its coz i have no experience what so ever in IT, so i thought desktop support would atleast give me an foot through the door, give me a bit of edge

i can sit there and talk about sql or 1st line support situations all day, but they ALWAYS go for the guy with more experience, which pisses me off

Make up experience bro.

They won't know you're sat in front of them with lies for experience if you can demonstrate the required knowledge to do the job.

EDIT - Just clocked what you meant. soz. Not really sure what to say then. Maybe look for really entry level jobs? Reek of passion in your interviews. Make them believe this job is the only thing you want in life.

It's not for me but it can be a solid career path. Most people that way inclined tend to specialise in various backend frameworks. I would imagine that leaves an even bigger gap to fill the demand for solely database analyst type jobs.

Application support...done mainly desktop support thus far in the Financial sector...but wouldn't mind a change tbh...n the peeeee looks alright, plus they give you a training budget each year...role sounds decent tbh...just wish I had more time to put effort into getting it :'(

How did it go?

Good luck from yesterday!

lol yeah sql can be a f*cker in interviews if you don't at least know the basics.

put it on my cv to improve my chances but started stuttering when asked a SQL ques in a interview

This pretty much...although I didnt even have it on my CV to start with tbh, it was the recruiter who was like...do you know it...n i was like errrmmm...abit...but it seems man was championing my abilities to the company.

I smashed everything else in the interview...roleplays n shit, n test on other server/networking shit. Duppied the english test, but knowing fuck all SQL I think is the deal breaker. I outright told them I only touched on it (sql) here n there, n that it wouldnt be something that I would scream about...seemed like a whole chunk of Qs just disappeared from my interview right there.

Funny thing is, for my 1st written test they left me in the room on my own, I could have been hammering google non-stop, but that would have made me look like a bigger d*ck when it came to him hammering me with the verbal ones.

im trying to get into desktop support, dont understand what im doing wrong man

whats the woirk like? i heard u mainly just resetting passwords

err its nuts if you havent got experience tbh...I basically got raped paywise for the sake of getting something on my CV (ie I was getting paid £70 per day, but I think to start with, my presence in the company was costing them potentially another "0" on the end of that per day) but yeah got a lucky break, straight into a global investment bank 2nd line support, rode that out for a couple years, would still be there now if things were not getting political tbh, but moved on to my current role...was abit unsure tbh...similar investment bank, although only UK-wide not global, but I have the opportunity to do more in the role, although its now including 1st line stuff, which I kinda feel is a step back, so I dunno how long I really wanna be here tbh. Though the manager knows hes got lucky with me, literally only passed my probation on Fri, but he was dropping about there being some money in the kitty to up my wages n ting, so we'll see.

Saying that though, I think ideally I wouldnt mind moving into infrastructure or even project management, as I did some project work in my first job with an EMEA ms-office upgrade. It was stressful shit, but the reward of seeing the computers being ticked off the sheet was rewarding. So who knows

Just got a call from recruiter....

They want me back for final interview! !

Spent all last night n today mopin around depressed aswell.

Feedback was, , although I have no sql experience, from the way confidently answered the shit I know, it was clear i had the technical acumen to learn what was required.

Fucked thing is...ive kinda mentally dismissed the job in my head, so I dont even want it anymore

Added to the fact that I am actually starting to enjoy current "new" role and are making noticeable waves...fucks sake

Safe...yeah the experience has been calm tbh...had some 2nd round interview last week tthat try rival The Apprentice style of grilling.

Had four sets of people grill me one by one...was sat in the hot chair for a solid 2 hrs. CV & work experience dissected like a motherfucker...that job I never really actually wanted, but just to refresh my Q&A ability

Final interview tom...but im still up...alarm set for 0515 :/

Gotta do a solid shift at work aswell before reaching...imma be a wreck.

From what the recruiter said...if I've gotten to this stage, then its pretty much mine to lose :Y:

Feel bad for my current place though man...new manager dropping bars like needing team stability, n how he sees me as a good foundation for that. Got some new ting at work saying it will be the biggest mistake of my life if I leave there/her   :ghost: im not that desperate to beat surely that I would turn down a potential 10k increase (although more likely 5k for the moment)

Numbers got exchanged time ago...though think she took everyones in the team...although I would be interested to know if she blows up their phones out of hours as much as she does mine...anyway that's another thread...just waiting to go in now...the amount of chicks in this place....fucking heaven!!!

Well thats renewed my thirst for the job!!

Place sounds DECENT...regular social event, fifa gaming evening/nights on the projectors, team trips away...no more shirt n tie shit...

After the customary grilling, interview turned into a discussion about breaking bad, Luther n go-karting.

Guess I will see how it pans out :/

Tie is overkill tbh, just makes things overly clinical/stuffy.

Trousers n shirt is calm though.

Update on job...they are slyly mocking the ting, n taking ages to get back to me. They interviewed some next breh, but wasnt feeling him apparently, so im the lead runner...but recruiter is already saying they are looking to offer a potentially silly wage...so booooooooy...dunnah tbh, taking me for some Dave tbh, n current role has the potential to get alot more interesting if I put the effort in.

Guess I will wait to see what they come with :/

since u lot said helpdesk roles wud be a step down, if i already know sql

so i started looking for jobs roles with a bit of sql in it, already landed 2 assessment centres interviews, one for 2morrow and the next for next thursday

fingers crossed man

Help desk is a step down IF uve already been doing 2nd line shit. If your still trying to build ur cv, unless u get lucky (thankfully like I did) it can be abit nuts, no matter what certificates n qualifications you have.

Good luck though, key with IT shit is to show them ur a calm logical thinker, thats capable of thinkin outside of the box
