A DERANGED German who fell out with a computer gamer on the internet flew to Britain and stabbed him to death, police fear. Student Matthew Pyke, 20 – who ran a forum website for fans who play a “geeky” computer strategy game called Advance Wars – was found brutally murdered in a bedsit above a pub he shared with his girlfriend. Detectives confirmed yesterday they had arrested a 21-year-old German at his home in Frankfurt in connection with the frenzied killing. They swooped after a gamer called David Heiss posted a message from Germany on Matthew’s partner Joanna Witton’s Facebook site. In it Heiss – whose online alias is Eagle the Lightening – apologised to her for “having caused so much trouble lately.” Matthew's bloodstained body was found by Joanna at the flat they shared above the Orange Tree pub in Nottingham city centre, last Friday Last night police refused to confirm that Heiss was the arrested man but detectives admitted internet links were a line of inquiry they were actively following. Matthew and Joanna ran a website called Wars Central devoted to players of the Advance Wars game. It included a forum where game players could discuss tips and strategies for the chess-like game, in which armies of cartoon characters battle against each other. Police were believed to be working on the theory that another fan of the game may have fallen out with Matthew in cyberspace and then taken extreme revenge in real life. One anonymous poster suggested other forum members may have known who was behind the killing. “We may know a lot of what was going on prior to the killing, but I, for one, am not going to say any more,” he said. Then on Tuesday Heiss posted his message on Joanna’s Facebook page – the only time he had ever contacted her through the site. Heiss, who lists his main activities and interests on Facebook as the internet and video gaming, said: “I will pray for you - you must be suffering unbelievable pain. "I’m sorry for having caused so much trouble lately. I hope you won’t lose all your hope. We will be there for you.” Heiss lists his occupation as “apprentice” and describes himself as a “jack of all trades/dogsbody”. Advertisement His Facebook site contains only one picture, and he has only 15 listed “friends” - including Joanna - in Germany, the UK, USA and France. Police believe he may have got to know Matthew, who used the name “Shade” on the internet, and Joanna through their Wars Central site. The Advance Wars games were originally played on the Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo DS hand-held consoles, although the latest version can also be played over the internet. In the games players command armies in a battle to wipe out an enemy force on a grid-based map. But one gaming expert said yesterday: “It’s hard to see how anyone could get worked up about a game like this. "It’s more like chess than anything else. There’s no real violence in it. If anything, it’s got a bit of a geeky, nerdy reputation.” Police were still examining the flat where Matthew was killed yesterday and were trying to find the murder weapon. Det Ch Insp Tony Heydon appealed for anyone who had seen a “bladed weapon, possibly bloodstained”, to come forward. He said he also wanted to hear from anyone who saw someone in the area wearing bloodstained clothes. Matthew, who also published science fiction on the internet, moved to Nottingham from Stowmarket, Suffolk, two years ago. He was about to start a course at Nottingham Trent University, where Joanna was also planning to study, after failing to complete a physics course he began in 2006.
