Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Connecticut, pointed the deadly weapon at a pumpkin under the eyes of an instructor and pulled the trigger as his dad reached for a camera.But the recoil of the automatic weapon was too great and he lost control of the gun.He was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Sunday after the incident at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club.His father, Charles, said he was just 10ft behind his son and reaching for his camera when the weapon fired.Mr Bizlij, the director of emergency medicine at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford, Connecticut, said he let his son try the Uzi because it was a 'small' weapon with little recoil.He said: "This accident was truly a mystery to me This is a horrible event, a horrible travesty, and I really don't know why it happened."Charles Bizilj, the father of eight year old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head with a UziCharles Bizlij talks about his sonA police investigation is under way and officers are checking weapons permits of the shooting club.Massachusetts requires gun fans to apply for a licence to own firearms, but the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives issues different licences to possess machine guns.Lt Hipolito Nunez of Westfield police said: "The weapon was loaded and ready to fire."The eight-year-old victim had the Uzi and as he was firing the weapon, the front end of the weapon went up with the backfire and he ended up receiving a round in his head." Jerry Belair, a spokesman for Massachusetts-based Stop Handgun Violence, said: "It's easy to lose control of a weapon like that ... they are used on a battleground for a very good reason."It's to shoot as many times as you possibly can without having to reload at an enemy that's approaching. It's not a toy. It's not something to play with."The machine gun shoot drew crowds of hundreds, with adverts promising demonstrations and rentals and free handgun lessons with no permits or licenses required.Children under 16 were admitted free, and both adults and children were offered free .22-caliber pistol and rifle shooting.
